    Mountain biking Croatia

A very enjoyable trip in a beautiful country with a great group of people.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

Probably sitting outside the mountain hut at the end of the second day with a cold beer, taking in magnificent views of mountains in one direction and the sea in the other with the rest of the group after a strenuous day on the bike.

What did you think of your group leader?

We had 2 local staff on this trip: Vlado the cyclist and Pjer the van driver. Two contrasting personalities, they complemented each other well. Vlado, lean and fit, a multiple cycling champion of the former Yugoslavia, kept the group together and happy with a mix of firm direction and a dry sense of humour. Pjer, former Croatian TV personality and much more than a simple van driver, was the epitome of the cool dude and the perfect foil to Vlado. They did a great job and we learnt a lot about Croatia as we travelled around.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

This is a really good trip: the grading at moderate/challenging is probably about right. There are some long climbs, so a reasonable level of fitness will help you get the best from the trip. While none of the descents is overly technical, there's enough to keep you on your toes with an adrenaline rush every now and again.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

I really enjoyed the week and it was a pleasure to spend time with such a nice group of people. Croatia is a beautiful country and, on a personal note, very good for vegetarians. The only reason I haven't given the trip 5 stars is the tarmac/off road ratio suggested in the trip notes (75/25) is in reality probably more like 50/50.

    Mountain biking in Croatia

This holiday is perfect for anyone who enjoys mountain biking in a stunning location. The route through the mountains down to the coast gives the riders a fantastic opportunity to see the diversity of Croatia's landscape, with stunning views at every turn. A decent level of fitness is a prerequisite to enjoying this trip with plenty of climbing, however the off road sections were not technically challenging.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

The wild flower meadows in the Velebit National Park were breathtaking.

What did you think of your group leader?

Vlado is a great guy . He kept the group together and looked after everyone. His commentary en route about the area and the history added to our enjoyment of the riding.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Get fit before you go so that you can enjoy the climbs!

Is there anything else you would like to add?

The proportion of road riding is considerably more than that stated in the trip notes.

    MOUNTAIN BIKING IN CROATIA

The views, the wind in my face, the fab feeling of being free, what a holiday.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

My most inspirational moment was making the climb to the mountain hut in really cold and wet conditions, the buzz was brilliant.

What did you think of your group leader?

Our leader was a great cyclist and presented very well maintained bikes. He had a great knowledge of the area and was interesting to engage in discussiona about his Country. He tried hard to keep the group together which was difficult given that there were many different abilities.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

The ride is quiet hard, you need to get fit and have previous mountian bike experience, which some of the group lacked.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

Overall a great holiday which I would recommend to anyone you likes to cycle in wonderful scenery.

    MOUNTAIN BIKING IN CROATIA

Excellent trip. Beautiful scenery, stunning views & decent, challenging cycling to get the legs pumping and feel you're doing exercise. You need to have a decent level of fitness prior to the trip to ensure a more enjoyable time & not make it frustrating on the others by lagging behind. Croatia is a beautiful country, would very much recommend this holiday.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

On our third day we cycled through the Velebit National Park up to the Zavizan Mountain Hut. In total that day we climbed 2,000 meters. The last few km's hurt so much but well worth it when arriving at the top to an ice cold beer. Accommodation that night is in the hut which is n't ideal as you've to share a room with everyone else but don't let that put you off as its part of the experience & the food, batter, craic was great fun. Its a once off, you're on holidays so part of the excitement!

What did you think of your group leader?

Vladimir is excellent, he's a great leader/guide. Over 70% was off-road cycling on gravel tracks. I was more used to tarmac cycling but Vladimir was excellent the way he looked out for me & everyone else making sure all were safe & not falling behind. He's very proud of his country by pointing out great scenery while we were cycling along, he's very knowledgeable filling us in about Croatia. He's also got a great sense of humour & was fun to sit down with for a few beers in the evening. The support car was driven by Pjer, who again is extremely nice & pleasant. Both guys work very well together & could not have treated us any better.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Be fit enough prior to going as that way you'll enjoy it more. There's 6 days cycling in a row which was fantastic as a lot of these trips take a one day break after 3 or 4 days.  Also if you're wondering about night life & if you're female .... what to pack, Its very casual & quite we mainly stayed having drinks in the hotel we were staying in overnight. It was very relaxed but still prefect all the same after a day of cycling.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

Croatia is a gorgeous country, well worth a visit especially on a bike so definitely go ahead & book it. The accommodation is the normal exodus type accommodation which is fine & the evening accommodation in the mountain hut is a once off experience so don't let that put you off the holiday, its still well worth doing it.

    MOUNTAIN BIKING IN CROATIA

Croatia is stunning and to fully appreciate the scenery, you'll need to love to be on two wheels.  This is a hard trip for something listed as 'Moderate to Challenging'

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

The scenery and the decents are out of this world.  A truly amazing place.

What did you think of your group leader?

This trip is run by a cycling legend who loves his country.  Great sense of humour when they get to know you, this trip duo are a tough act to beat.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

With serious mountain ascents and long distances, mainly off road - this isn't a moderate by any stretch of the imagination.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

It may be well worth updating the trip details as these were not up to date.  This is a challenging trip - no moderate about it.

    MOUNTAIN BIKING IN CROATIA

I would thoroughly recommend this holiday as a fantastic way to visit a beautiful country in a very different way.  To get the most benefit from it you definitely need to be fit and to expect some long days in the saddle but the rewards make it very worthwhile.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

The long climb through the Velebit National Park up to the mountain hut at the top of the Zavizan Mountain was a real challenge, but the camaraderie of the group and support of our tour leader kept everyone going to the summit where the breathtaking views over the mountains and coastline together with a hearty meal and a cold beer as the sun set made it worth the effort.

What did you think of your group leader?

Vlado was a brilliant tour leader, keeping a close eye on the welfare of everyone in the group whilst maintaining control with a dry sense of humour.  Seemingly carved from Croatian rock and super-fit (as you might expect from a fifteen-times national sprint-cycling champion), Vlado and our van driver Pjer made a great double act and nothing was ever too much for them in their desire to ensure that we got the most out of our holiday and the Croatian countryside.  Their knowledge of the country’s history, economy and culture brought a lot to the enjoyment of our time in Croatia.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Be cycling-fit, happy to enjoy the inevitable challenging ascents that are followed by long, exhilarating descents on both off-road trails and quiet tarmac roads and you will absolutely love this holiday.  We went in July and temperatures were in the thirties, not the twenties indicated in the trip notes, so be prepared for temperatures to be higher than expected.  Camelbacks proved to be unnecessary as the van carried a constant supply of water and this saved us carrying a lot of extra weight whilst cycling in the heat of the sun.  Mountain bikers and road cyclists should enjoy this holiday in equal measure and the bikes have front suspension, hydraulic brakes and are very well maintained.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

Croatia is a beautiful country and the locals are very welcoming.  We cycled through fields of colourful wild flowers and clouds of butterflies, up winding mountains tracks and through sun-dappled woodland, and sped down long gravel trails and deserted tarmac mountain roads.  We saw unbelievably crystal clear lakes, thundering waterfalls, sparkling rivers and sensational sunsets, and cooled off in the Adriatic.  Our tour group gelled from the start and there was always laughter and chat from morning to night.  We were very sorry when the time came to leave.  What a great holiday and what a fantastic way to enjoy this lovely country!

    MOUNTAIN BIKING IN CROATIA

Not enough off road, some long end of day road sections, but all in all a lovely way to see western Croatia, and some spectacular riding with a great guide, support and group.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

Sunset over the Adriatic from the mountain lodge at the end of day 2... all that climbing was indeed worth it... and surely the next day would all be downhill!

What did you think of your group leader?

Vlado is an olympic athlete through and through.  Despite driving us hard for the first four days, hindsight made us realise that this was all for the right reasons.  Very attentive, and hard to fault, but don't expect too much praise!

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

This is graded challenging due to the MASSIVE distances involved.  The off road is all on double track (barring about half a mile!) and not technically tricky.  But the distances and huge climbs (day 2 is about 2500m up!), especially in the mid-summer heat are tough.  Fitness is definitely more of a pre-requisite than mountain biking prowess.  The trip notes suggest that the route is 25% road, 75% off-road.  Reverse this and you're probably about right.  The off road is good when it's off road though.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

Great trip.  Great crowd.  4 very tough first days for the two of us who are used to a couple of hours of intense mountain biking in the UK as opposed to mountain bike touring which is really what this trip is all about.  Two gripes then - first is explained above with regard to the lack of off road and rather a lot of on road distance (although we were always grateful for up on tarmac!).  The other was that for two of the nights, the hotels were really uninspiring.  Comfortable yes.  But really, after a long day's ride ON HOLIDAY, the hotels need to be somewhere inspiring - whether that's in a cultural centre, panoramic location or so on.  Day 2's mountain hut was absolutely spot on, as was Novum Castrum in Novigrad which is in a spectacular location on the coast for nights 4,5, and 6.  Plitvice well worth a visit, and both the lake ride and trip through Pag unexpectedly lovely rides...

    MOUNTAIN BIKING IN CROATIA

For a fantastic all-round summer holiday with a difference choose Croatia, but to really appreciate the place you need to be a cyclist or mountain biker. I strongly recommend this holiday to both cyclists and mountain bikers because the venue has so much to offer that is so different to other places. The guides were very professional and helpful and the accommodation comfortable.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

I am a seasoned mountain biker, so my best moments were the long gravel downhills. However, you need to make up your mind if you are going to enjoy the scenery or the downhill experience. You cannot do both! Of course there were also some challenging and rewarding climbs. I loved the Plitvice Lakes and the end of day chill out at the hotels watching the sunset against the sea and some odd cloud formations. Day and late night swimming in the turquoise waters of the Adriatic Sea.

What did you think of your group leader?

Ex- Olympic track sprinter Vlado? He is the man! He is still in peak physical condition. And he takes his job of looking after you and ensuring you enjoy your holiday very seriously. He is not a bad downhiller either! Van sleeper (I mean driver and keen cyclist) Pjer provided evening entertainment and support for all mechanical problems. Puncture? 10 second wheel swap. Job done.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

The countryside and coast is beautiful and worth the visit for this reason alone. Reasonably fit cyclists will be ok on this holiday, but there are some gravelly stretches that take the uninitiated by surprise. If you can ride your gravel driveway you will be ok, but I recommend a little off road practice before you go. Sun cream. Keep plenty with you. Even in June you can get sun burned. I only found this a problem on the exposed road stretches. I covered myself in sun cream, but missed a bit.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

This venue is great for both mountain bikers and cyclists and gives a really good rounded feel to a summer holiday. For the road-cyclists out there I can add that the roads were brilliant and mostly traffic free. I felt far safer on the long main roads there than I could ever feel in the UK. I also enjoyed the quiet windy country roads through isolated villages connecting up the off-road trails.

    MOUNTAIN BIKING IN CROATIA

This was an excellent epic mountain biking holiday riding through beautiful national parks on tracks and mainly very quiet roads in unspoilt Croatia.  The guides were great - they couldn't do enough for us and gave sensible advice. The accommodation was suitable and the hotel at the end where we stayed for 3 nights was just perfect - a gorgeous location, friendly and family run, right on the coast.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

The most inspirational moment was on the second day - we had to do a long steady climb after putting in considerable mileage earlier that day and the day before - the long steady climb seemed to take for ever, but it was probably only a couple of hours - with the mountain refuge as a goal, drinks having been lined up outside and superb views towards the nearby coast, islands of the Adriatic and the Italian coast way in the distance.

What did you think of your group leader?

Our group leader Vlado was great.  He had competed in the Montreal Olympics and didn't seem to have turned his training down much since then....!  He and the driver of the van really did everything they could to ensure the trip was a success, we all enjoyed it and we all had fun (which we did) and that everyone was okay in all respects. The hire bikes were much better quality than I'd expected but if anything needed adjusting Vlado was there to do it straightaway.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

My advice is definitely to go on this trip, having done some training...! I had done no mountain biking to speak of before and was fine although there were some fairly hair raising long descents which were exhilarating - but not for the timid.   That said, I have done a fair amount of road biking - say 3 times a week over the past 6 months and felt I just got by in terms of the amount of preparation I'd done.  Anyone who is an experienced mountain biker and reasonably fit would be fine.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

Croatia is a beautiful country.  When I went (early June 2012) it was very lush and not burned up by the sun at all; there were lots of wild flowers;  the rivers were crysal clear and the lakes were a lovely blue/green colour. There were waterfalls, karst limestone mountain ranges, coastal islands and the sea was as clean and clear as you can possibly imagine, and there were not many tourists at all.  Mountain biking is a great way to see the country.

    MOUNTAIN BIKING IN CROATIA

A great trip seeing Croatia at close quarters and getting to parts not normally seen as a tourist.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

Arriving at a mountain pass, a view of the mountains just traversed behind us and a view over the many islands and the Croatian coastline nestled into the blue Adriatic sea in front of us.

What did you think of your group leader?

A knowledgeable guy with a great sense of humour but also very consious of his responsibilities of a leader to his charges.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

    Just enjoy!

    MOUNTAIN BIKING IN CROATIA

A memorable holiday; long, hard and rewarding days cycling in breathtaking mountains and forests with the last two days being contrasting rides out from  a luxurious family run hotel right on the beach.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

There were many inspirational moments. The mountain hut was stunning; whilst not the most comfortable accommodation we stayed in, the views were endless and watching the sun go down over the mountains, sea and islands, was memorable. The cycling itself was the highlight. The route is well planned, varied and interesting, starting in the mountains and forest, and ending on the coast; with some lengthy hard climbs, rewarded by exhilarating long downhill trails . The first day seemed quite challenging at the time, although with the benefit of hindsight, it was the easy day that we were promised. The scenery is spectacular, wonderful forests full of wildlife, flowers and butterflies. Plitvice lakes are stunningly beautiful, and the natural music from the sea organ at Zadar is haunting and memorable. Our group chose an optional ride on the last day; a short bus transfer followed by a ride with a steep climb to the most spectacular view of the holiday, over sea , lake and islands.

What did you think of your group leader?

Vladimir was a good leader and amazing cyclist who supported the weaker cyclists whilst allowing the faster ones to go at their own speed . We were very well looked after, no injuries and  no mechanical problems being a tribute to the great care that was taken. Vladimir is very knowledgeable about the countryside, the history and the various places we visited . The ride was extremely well supported, with a support vehicle following , giving confidence to attempt daunting climbs safe in the knowledge that a bailout was available if required. Retiring exhausted to the after-party in the van with Pjer was fun.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Being used to off-road cycling and having a good level of fitness will greatly add to the enjoyment of this trip, but the support is excellent so the long distances and climbs need not be problematic.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

This is a fabulous opportunity to see some of the less travelled Croatia on a bike.

    Tougher than you think

Beautiful countryside in the north of Croatia. The lakes and hills are stunning but also means lots of long steep climbs and down hills.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

Staying in the hut at the top of the mountain, whilst cold and not especially comfortable was great as it really felt like being back in nature, and the sunset was stunning. Every day there was something special in the scenery.

What did you think of your group leader?

An Olympic competitor means that your leader is going to be super fit and possibly difficult to keep up with.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Expect to get wet in the mountains, as the lakes need to get their water from somewhere"

Is there anything else you would like to add?

I've been on other moderate to challenging trips and this was by far the most difficult. So get training and enjoy the astounding sights and sounds of the lake district of Croatia!

    MOUNTAIN BIKING IN CROATIA

Amazing trip. Some of the best biking scenery I have come across. Extremely tough but wonderfully rewarding.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

Cycling through the stone towers of Velebit NP before dropping down to sea level and then being able to sit on the hotel veranda with a cold beer and view the farway mountain range we had just cycled from.

What did you think of your group leader?

Super fit leader, ex-olympian cyclist. I think he was expecting the group to be fitter than we were but his expectations evolved as the week progressed. Great fun to be had from the support vehicle driver.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

    Get youself fit before departing.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

Enjoy this trip. So rewarding. Croatia is such a stunning country.

    MOUNTAIN BIKING IN CROATIA

A fantastic, memorable trip in a stunning landscape - from spectacular lakes and mountains to glorious coastline. The challenging (for me!) cycling was complemented by excellent company and good accommodation (particularly the last three nights in our hotel at Novigrad, right next to the sea).

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

Passing through the unspoilt Velebit mountain range, surrounded by an array of wild flowers and clouds of butterflies. Descending the Mali Halan pass in the sunshine, taking in the amazing views on our way to the coast. Visiting beautiful, turquoise Plitvice Lakes - something I have always wanted to do. Just sitting on the terrace at our hotel in Novigrad, with a glass of wine (or beer!), watching the sun set.

What did you think of your group leader?

The group leader was professional, attentive and competent, with excellent local knowledge. The trip ran very smoothly and without adverse incident thanks to his efficiency. The assistant leader was extremely friendly and helpful - always looking out to make sure everyone was OK, and sharing the group's sense of humour. I think we all enjoyed their company.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Echoing Tony (Denis) Halpin's review, bring ear plugs for the mountain hut - and loo roll/wet wipes would be a good idea too as 'facilities' are limited! Make sure your off-road skills are up to scratch as there are quite a lot of slippy gravel climbs and descents to negotiate. Other than that all I can say is 'Come on this trip!' - I thought it was brilliant!

Is there anything else you would like to add?

The food, drink and standard of hotel accommodation were really good. The trip notes rather underestimate the daily distances travelled and I would say that the trip veers much more towards the 'challenging' than the 'moderate' grading. But maybe that is just my perception as I am no superwoman! Having said that, it is in my top three holidays ever and I would go again tomorrow if I could!

    MOUNTAIN BIKING IN CROATIA

An enjoyable and physically challenging trip which provided an interesting insight into a country with a very interesting recent history and impressive natural scenery including torquoise lakes, mysterious forests and jagged mountains.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

Descending by mountain bike from the Zavisan mountain hut on a cool clear Summer morning, torn between staying safely on the bike and absorbing the views of the surrounding Velebit mountains, was a memorable moment. A different but equally unforgetable experience was watching the sun sink gently into the darkening blue Adriatic from the terrace of our small hotel in the coastal town of Novigrad.

What did you think of your group leader?

Our Croatian leader on this trip was a strong and confident individual who took his leadership responsibilities very seriously and sometimes ,because of this, came across as being somewhat autocratic. He was also  a very competent mountain-biker who ensured that we all completed the trip without mishap.   The assistant leader/vehicle driver was a gregarious character whose English was excellent and his knowledge of  cycling and bikes extensive.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

My advice for potential travellers to Croatia is - Develop your knowledge and awareness of Croatia's recent history and learn a few useful words of Croatian.Ensure that your mountain-biking skills and fitness are of a relatively high standard !

Is there anything else you would like to add?

The local Croatian beer was very nice and the food, generally, was good or very good but take your own favourite nosh when you go to the mountain hut. I would also suggest ear-plugs for this overnight! Apart from that and "dodgy" toilets a visit to the mountain hut should not be missed. Finally,as a road cyclist and sometimes off-roader I would take issue with the statement in the  Trip Notes "off road experience advisable but not essential" and suggest that it should simply state - "off road experience advisable"

    Mountain Biking in Croatia

fantastic trip and will be using your company again, the organisation of luggage, bikes and transfers was highly efficient and expertly done, and the people involved ( Vladi and Ivan } were the icing on the cake. Both were very helpful, entertaining and great fun.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

Reaching the top of the 17k climb. Hardest climb ever done, and in 27 degrees !

What did you think of your group leader?

the best and the fittest leader ever encountered, and he certainly needs all the praise for the hard work he put in and the info and history dished out throughout the rides.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

work on your fitness, as the rides were harder than expected.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

All the trails and rides were fantastic with great views and scenery.

Cycling in the Croatian Lake district

Cycling lots of long climbs and descents in the beautiful Croatian Lake district and all the way to the coast.. The scenary is spectacular consisting of forests, lakes, rock formations, waterfalls, open fields, etc, etc.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

Staying the in hill top hut was fantastic. Very basic, no hot water or TV, bunk beds in a dormatory, etc but great hearty food, fantastic views and a real feeling of being close to nature.

What did you think of your group leader?

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Make sure you're prepared for the long climbs.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

All breakfasts and dinners are included so you won't need much spending money.

    A Great Experience

Excellent and very enjoyable. First time on a cycling trip for me but will be the first of many from now on in!, great guide and meet a great bunch of people who made the holidays even better!

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

for a beginner this was a pretty big jump in the cycling world, and found it very challenging, however it was a great achievement after every day and have returned back to the UK even more refreshed than usual ready to book the next adventure!

What did you think of your group leader?

group leader was excellent and felt safe all the time. I did never feel out of place at any time and learned some very valuable tips for cycling. I hope the next leader can live up to Vlado Fumic experience and skill in working the group even though we had all different levels of skill.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

If your thinking of booking, stop and do it, one of the best holidays I have had, thoroughly enjoyable.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

I hope there will be different rides in Croatia, the country is beautiful and has really left a good impression on me.

    Mountain Biking in Croatia

A fantastic experience and a well organised trip. The route took us through the mountains, some coastal areas and unesco world heritage sites. Six days of cycling in a beautiful country and memories you will not forget

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

The big climb to the mountain hut on day 2, over 6500 feet of climbing.

What did you think of your group leader?

Fantastic guy and very knowledgeable. He is a former Olympic cyclist and hasn't lost his passion for the sport, also a patriot who gave us lots of interesting information along the way

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Don't hesitate - book it. You will find it a very memorable trip

Is there anything else you would like to add?

It is the first time I have used Exodus and they helped when my travel arrangements didn't quite go to plan. I will have no hesitation in using them again

    Mountain biking in Croatia

Great scenery and views, some challenging climbs and some great descents.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

That everybody got to the mountain hut before it got dark! And then celebrated in the usual fashion.

What did you think of your group leader?

Vlad, the group leader was tireless in ensuring the safety of the group and very knowledgeable about the areas we cycled in.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Be prepared for the 3rd day cycle up to the Zavizan mountain hut to be tough, but the rest of the days are easier in comparison, so you ca give this one your all.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

Be prepared for some decent on loose tracks. A modicum of mountain biking experience is required.
