Mount Kenya Trek

Well organised with good guides. The scenery is ever changing and quite spectacular. Great weather - perfect blue sky and sunshine on summit day. The camp by the caves on the second night is really something special with the singalong by the campfire and the millions of stars in the sky.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

Seeing the sunrise on the approach to the summit. The beautiful green tarns on day three.

What did you think of your group leader?

Very good - friendly, approachable and informative.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Bring lots of wet wipes and plenty of deet - there are a LOT of insects!

    Mount Kenya

Anyone keen on treking off the beaten track with little chance of meeting other walkers should look at this trip. The treking is demanding but the effort is rewarded with spectacular views and superb wildlfe. Much better alternative to Killy. Hard to understand why this trip is not oversubscribed!

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

Watching the sunrise at Point Leanna at just under 5000m and looking across at the top of Killymanjaro poking up out of the clouds some 250 miles away is a truly unforgetable moment.

What did you think of your group leader?

Having went on a few of these trips and met some professionals the leader is this group surpassed all others. His knowledge coupled with his personality made him a pleasure to travel with.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Give Exodus a call on this one. If you want to see rural East Africa without crowds of walkers this is the trip for you. Truly an experience which is understated at present. Get there before that changes.

    Mt Kenya Accent

A great trek on East Africa's quieter and more beautiful peak!

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

Crossing the Hausberg Col at 4600m and getting our first view of Point Lenana. A sense of achievement for reaching the highest point of the trip so far but also a sense of anticipation for the following days climb to the peak.

What did you think of your group leader?

Peter and Wilson were great leaders. They both knew the mountain like the back of their hands and were also willing to pass on their knowledge.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Take the advice of the guides to walk 'poli, poli' (slowly, slowly) and drink lots of water!

    Epic!

As a first-time high-altitude climber, I went into this trek with some trepidation. It is definitely the toughest physical and mental challenge I've encountered so far. However, loads of amazing views along the way, friendly local guides and excellent company made this trek enjoyable despite various challenges. The difficulty rating is pretty spot on and this trek needs some prior training if not actual experience. A must-do adventure and a great way to see Africa for the first time.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

The 'scree scramble' up Hausberg Col (day 4) just hours before the trek was probably as tough as the ascent itself, but it brought out the best in myself and a few others.

What did you think of your group leader?

Peter Mwangi and his assistant guide Wilson were simply A+. Mature, informative and extremely helpful throughout the trek, they made every attempt to keep us comfortable and get to the top and descend safely.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

The ascent day involves a six hour climb up to Pt. Lenana and the descent to Shipton's Camp. No problem. But, the kicker was a 7 hour 'death march' that followed soon after, when the group was moved to Old Moses Camp which is at least 15km away (the guides vehemently claimed it was 12, but my feet don't believe them). Prepare yourself for this and keep a pair of soft walking / approach shoes for the long, final trek (if you're a noob like me, your toes will be hammered to bits once you've descended and your heavy boots won't do you any good). Also, have some reserve in the tank to savour the scenery along the way to Old Moses. Magnificent!

Is there anything else you would like to add?

Unfortunately I have to point out that despite their excellent support, the local tour operator forgot to collect a few of us from the designated hotel (as agreed with Exodus) due to an admin oversight. This resulted in a frustrating 3-hour delay and our inability to trek to the Mau Mau caves on day 1. Suggestion: If you are landing in Nairobi separately from the main group, call Exodus or the local operator beforehand to ensure your pick-up is absolutely firm.

A great trip to Mount Kenya

An excellent trek in Kenya. The scenery was great, the weather kind and the group was good fun.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

Reaching Point Lenana at sunrise. The 3 days I spent at Malindi on the coast after the trek were a great way to see another part of Kenya.

What did you think of your group leader?

Excellent. The support from the whole crew was fantastic.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

If you are a reasonably fit hill walker then you can complete the ascent. Be prepared for some long days especially the ascent day when you will be on the go for over 12 hours. The pace can seem very slow at times as there will be a variety of ages and fitness levels so go with the flow.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

The trip was excellent. The down side was that the group of friends I was with (we were land only) were not picked up at Nairobi and had to wait over 3 hours for a vehicle; this spoilt the first day. Exodus - you need to get your act together when meeting up with group members not on group flights. The trek on the last day from Old Moses camp to the park entrance was nothing to write home about.

    Mt Kenya Ascent

I thoroughly enjoyed this, but it is tough.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

    Getting to Pt. Lenana.

What did you think of your group leader?

    Friendly, seemed very organised.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

I managed to walk wearing sandals & knee-length shorts for the first 3 days (sandy soils, through bamboo forest & across the initial bog). If you know you tend to prefer walking in sandals, I recommend it as long as you can handle muddy feet & biting ants (they bite the people wearing regular boots & full trousers too) . Need light trainers for chilly nighttime; 3 pairs of shoes isn't so crazy in case one pair needs drying out.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

Bring painkillers in case of high altitude headaches or mild sickness. Our Guide asked us to decide the size of tip for each team member (porter, guides, cook, etc). This is apparently unusual, but guide wanted to do things this way to make things transparent. Worth being prepared for! We gave more to the staff with more responsibility which seemed to be well-received by the team.

    Ascent of Mt Kenya

A well organised and paced trek with plenty of time to enjoy the surroundings. Perfect weather conditions and timing on the final ascent produced an amazing sunrise experience "on top of the world." Guides and porters really pleasant and helpful with fresh meals daily.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

From Pt. Lenana to look across the horizon at the curvature of the earth and Kilimanjaro 250 miles away.

What did you think of your group leader?

He paced us well and knew when to support someone on tricky stretches. He had good local fauna and flora knowledge and could identify all the peaks, tarns and glaciers for us. We were always well briefed for the next day.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

This is a very quiet, unspoilt route. Do it whilst it remains that way. The other more popular routes are over used, often with people who are unprepared. It is a hard route so a good level of fitness will help you enjoy it.

    Mount Kenya

Just wonderful. The trip notes and photos cannot do justice to what is one of the most special journeys in the world. Habitats change everyday. Views of the different peaks of the mountain gently reveal themselves. Before you finally ascend to the summit and watch the sun-rise across the plains, with Kilimanjoro in the distance. And every step of the way the Exodus team provide perfect commentary, from the flora and fauna to the history of the place. A perfect combination of place and people.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

Inspiration and moments to remember don't come much better than stepping onto the summit just before sun-rise. Then all we needed to do was sit back and watch as one of the most wonderful sights unfolded before our eyes - with the added wonder of the summit of Kilimanjaro being visible in the distance. Wonderful.

What did you think of your group leader?

Peter (and the rest of the support team) was nothing sort of amazing, and made sure that our trip was memorable for all the right reasons - a great guide; a wonderful host; and a new found friend. Bravo !

Mount Kenya Ascent....arduous, wet and exhilarating!

This trip was certainly deserving of the 'challenging/tough' label. Aside from the first and last days, all hiking was challenging underfoot. The going is almost always wet and boggy or once you get higher, loose scree and rock. This, of course, is part of the fun and also a characteristic of the Burgaret route - so the wildness and tranquility is hugely appealing but comes at the expense of comfort! Be prepared to be walking with your eyes down, watching where you put your feet rather than enjoying the view! We had a delightful group of 6 like-minded souls and we stuck together for the whole thing. I could imagine that it would feel harder if you fell behind. For that reason, having altitude experience and difficult hiking experience is a must. I am pretty fit but found the climbing in very thin air very tough. We were ably supported by fantastic teams on the ground from Patrick the local partner who met us at the airport and took us for a drink on our last day, to the 17 porters who looked after us spectacularly well, to our wonderful tour leader, Peter and his chief guide George. The only downside was that the rains had started (this is my only criticism of the trip - the rains are known to often start in October and thus going on a trip in late October can be very unpleasant). No one minds a bit of rain, in fact one expects it in mountain environment, but it rained all day every day and it made for very challenging conditions. We were soaked through and our packs (which weren't protected from the elements as the porters scaled the ridges) were also soaked. So it was hard to change into dry clothing. Also, the rain and mist and cloud meant that many of the excellent views were missed. The full service camping is fun and the food is terrific but it's hard going when it's cold and wet. The two camps were basic and long overdue for a decent overhaul but you are grateful for a bed - even if you're sharing a dormitory with your fellow travellers. On summit day, which was terrific, after the exhilaration of the climb and happy descent to a hearty and celebratory breakfast; we cheerily set on our way for the final long slog. And what a slog it was - you get up at 2am on summit day, make the summit for sunrise, descend, rest then set off again to get to our final camp. It was a very long and tiring day made all the harder because of the rain. This is not a trip for high maintenance people!

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

So many...! Climbing through the different zones was stimulating and enjoyable, from the giant bamboo to the lobelia and rosewood to the lava cliffs and scree. Different terrain each day. Our cook, David, produced unbelievable breakfasts, packed lunches and dinners every day - it beggars belief how he and his porters managed to cart 4 dozen eggs up to 4300 metres without any breakages! Our guide and leader, Peter, was calm, mature, very safety aware and very tuned into our comfort. He was a joy to work with. The summit itself was hard but exciting and reaching the peak really is the highlight of the holiday. We were even lucky to have the sunrise and clear views and perfect photos for that 4 hour period. One other happy moment was that the final camp (Old Moses) had beer! That cheered us all up after a gruelling day with over 12 hours of tough walking.

What did you think of your group leader?

Absolutely no complaints at all. Peter was excellent. George was quieter but a safe pair of hands and clearly knows the mountain like the back of his hand.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Some items were not on the essential kit list for the trip - I would say these are key items. Gaiters are absolutely essential to protect feet and calves. Even when it's warm and you're happy in light walking trousers and t shirts, the going underfoot is still wet. I would also say bring a waterproof kitbag liner. The exodus kit bags, whilst roomy, are not waterproof. Then wrap as much as you can in plastic bags or waterproof stuff sacks. I brought loads of food and snacks with me and didn't need any of it because we were fed so well. I would also bring a spare pair of shoes/sandals for walking round camp once your boots are off (or in my case, drying by the fire). Also, we didn't know this until we got there but we learned that it's customary to donate unwanted kit/walking gear to the leader and porters as they do not have much decent stuff, so it might be worth bringing stuff you want to leave behind. I donated my coat and my boots as I felt they would go to much better use....

Is there anything else you would like to add?

Be careful about going after mid October... You will risk the rainy season. But whatever you do and whenever you go, be prepared for a wonderful experience which is tough, fun, challenging at times, always stimulating, and, on summit day and on Hausberg Col, exhilarating!

Mt Kenya - equal to if not more enjoyable than Kili

This was an intense experience with a long haul trip being completed within a week. As always the people of Africa are very welcoming and their landscape is stunning. My Kenya is a beautiful mountain, and probably more so that Kilimanjaro in my opinion having done both.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

Reaching Point Lenana as the African sun was rising allowing us the most spectacular views across Kenya.

What did you think of your group leader?

Peter and Wilson were excellent and judged the pace perfectly on summit day, allowing us to arrive shortly before the sun came up. Both were extremely knowledgable and desperate for people to see their country. The owner, Patrick, provides a nice touch in seeing all clients before they leave and return from the mountain.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

The route used does involve scrambling, more so towards the top. Just worth mentioning this so people with reduced mobility are aware.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

It's quite a short trip for the distance travelled so it is quite intense. But if you enjoy that sort of thing as I do, being rushed around a country like Kenya, then you will enjoy every second.

    MT KENYA ASCENT

Great trek but I wouldn't recommend going in June as we had tremendous amount of rain (all day). We also got lost on day 5 and ended up walking up to 11 hours (instead of 7) prior to summit day...

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

What did you think of your group leader?

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Is there anything else you would like to add?

    MT KENYA ASCENT

My first trekking up a mountain experience! However this is not a walk in the park, and one I certainly would not really recommend - except maybe to my enemy!

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

I suppose getting to the top after leaving the hut at 230am and making it down again by 930am and then on for a 6/7 hour trek again to our next hut - in the rain. Not sure if that's classed as inspirational but it was definitely memorable!

What did you think of your group leader?

OK, however not like the leaders I have had on other Exodus trips.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Walking Poles are not on the trip notes but I think they are a necessity. As is loo roll, but it needs to be protected from the wet weather if you go in the rainy season. Gaters - I managed to borrow a pair - saved my trousers. Summit snacks - the food in general was very bland and unappetizing. We took malaria tablets but the majority did not. Don't go in the rainy season, it is not pleasant.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

We did meet some really nice fellow travellers, however the accommodation was very "Africa" ie no hot water/shower etc. In fact the last hut reminded me of Prisoner Cell Block H!! I think it would not have been so bad if there had been somehow to dry our stuff which was constantly wet due to the weather. Why do Exodus have to go with such accommodation even the lodge at the start was weary. I also felt sorry for the porters who were not wearing what I would class as proper kit - some wore willies definitely not suitable for this sort of trek. We left our walking boots with ours at the end.

    MT KENYA ASCENT

Great trip with a well thought out route and itinerary. Exceptional food and hygiene throughout coupled with supportive staff, help make this challenging walk a safe and enjoyable trek.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

Inspired to try and cook better food ; if I can eat fantastic food up a mountain with simple cooking facilities, I should be able to make better use of home facilities.

What did you think of your group leader?

Professional and committed to the group achieving the goal.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Double up with some Independant travel. A week is great if you don't have much annual leave (or have child care responsibilities), 2 to 3 would do Kenya more justice.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

When my kids are ready for this, am gonna take them. Good, safe walk. Not extreme enough for some, but was quite nice to come home without deli belly; although my wife was really looking forward to me dropping a stone.

    MT KENYA ASCENT

Very well run trip by excellent ground operator

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

All thirteen group members making the peak in time for sunrise

What did you think of your group leader?

Francis was excellent..taking time to go through all the details of the trip.He made sure we all had the correct kit..even going and buying odd items like suncream and sunglasses some of us had forgotten. He seemed a little serious to begin with but relaxed as the trip went on and the group bonded and he realised we were all comfortable. The owner of the ground operator..Mr Patrick met us at a lovely hotel on the way to the airport and gave our certificates and bought us a couple of drinks...nice touch that never had before on previous exodus..great chap who made us feel valued as a customer

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Exodus guidelines for tipping very important..we all gave the higher rate 100 dollars/£60/8000 schillings plus some on a direct basis..there were 26 staff looking after the 13 of us who worked very hard for us..they earnt every penny

Is there anything else you would like to add?

Harder ascent and descent than Kili but not as long..less crowded and more enjoyable...go for it!

    MT KENYA ASCENT

Mount Kenya is frequently desribed by friends as a 'prettier' climb than Mt Killimanjaro, so with that in mind I set off on the ascent with a group of like minded souls from various walks of life.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

What did you think of your group leader?

The group leader maintained a steady pace, always on the look out for those who might be tailing off the back, and even reorganising our order so that we would not be split up so frequently. An outline of the regions troubled history was a useful refresher, particularly when we got to the Mau Mau caves.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Although involved in an ascent of one of Africa's higheset mountains, the route is manageable by all those with a modicum of fitness. But do be prepared for smokey eating areas, as delightful meals are prepared on some very basic facilities, and be sure to wrap up at night when it can get cold while camping.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

Remember that we, the tourists and travellers, are the means by which the stall-holders earn their living, so don't be offended if they persist in trying to persuade you to buy something from their particular staff.

    MT KENYA ASCENT

Climbing Mount Kenya was a fabulous experience, extremely tough & delivering a both a mental & a physical challenge

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

Reaching the summit in time for sunrise - just ....

What did you think of your group leader?

Excellent in every respect, always mindful of our safety & comfort, as a group & as individuals

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

This is a tough challenge, both the ascent & descent - harder than Kilimanjaro both ascending & descending

Is there anything else you would like to add?

The final day of ascent & descent was overly lengthy; whilst nothing was untoward, had something gone wrong there would have been little contingency time

DON'T bother with antimalarials if you are only doing the basic trip - obvioulsy needed if you are off to the bush for safari after, or heading to Mombasa beach.

    Just do it!

    MT KENYA ASCENT

For an 8 day trip, this was a real adventure. Although primarily about reaching the summit of Mount Kenya, I thought travelling about 150 miles across the centre of Kenya, and back into the centre of Nairobi, was a really interesting experience - a panorama of people, animals, the Kenyan landscape and East Africa.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

It is difficult to get away from reaching the summit of Mount Kenya, after the amount of effort involved. Getting up at 2.00am, heading up scree slopes in the dark using head torches, reaching the Austrian hut before the final push to the summit, being on the top as the sun comes up. I also really liked seeing some of the animals on this trip. There were groups of Colubus monkeys and baboons moving along the dusty drive way, on our return to Montain Rock lodge.

What did you think of your group leader?

We had two leaders; Francis and Caesar, who I thought co-ordinated activities pretty well. They knew how to control both us and the cooks and porters too. They had a lot of local knowledge about flora and fauna. Most importantly, they handled the most dangerous bits of the ascent with skill and a responsible attitude.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

For me, a key thing would be to consider an extra day on the end of this trip. It builds to a 14 hour ascent day, followed by half a day back across Kenya in a Landcruiser, before the overnight flight home. I found this combination tiring. Generally, one has to be prepared for a lot of exertion and to be disciplined in combating altitude sickness i.e. make sure to drink 4 litres of water per day and rest up as appropriate.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

A great trip, which could be seen as an introduction to a longer adventure at high altitude, such as Kilimanjaro ascent.
