    Stunning volcanoes and brilliant beaches!

Really varied itinerary - the first week was more cultural and relaxing to build us up to the adventure of the second week. A beautiful destination with a lot to offer. The accommodation was a higher standard than expected, all very varied and comfortable.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

Reaching the top of Rinjani - it was a real toughie, we started trekking at 2am to ensure we were at the top for sunrise. A real achievement and experience.

What did you think of your group leader?

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Make sure you take what is advised on the packing list - all useful stuff. Plus pack enough lightweight clothing. It was really hot and humid so you sweat A LOT!

Is there anything else you would like to add?

If you are looking fro a challenge, dramatic scenery and idyllic beached (at the end of the trip) then don't hesitate to book this trip - it is great!

    Indonesia volcano Trek

Indonesia was always going to be a destination about which we had no preconceived ideas. We had read the guide books and "googled" the images but nothing prepared us for the reality. The trip provided a wonderfully varied introduction to a stunningly beautiful area - from temples and cities to incredible vistas and some tough trekking. A trip not to be missed!

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

Early morning visit to Borobudur - a beautiful setting for a mesmerizing temple complex. It would have been easy to wander around taking photos and not "seeing" the details, but it is definitely worth putting the camera away and immersing yourself in the carvings - from animals and people to ships and birds - amazing when you consider that they have survived earthquake and volcano! Climbing to the crater's rim of Mount Bromo - looking down into the crater and listening to the centre of the earth! Our free day option of diving/snorkelling off the Gili Islands - almost pristine conditions, a wealth of underwater wildlife (including turtles), no other divers and incredibly kind and knowledgeable dive school staff. Definitely "Turtle Heaven".

What did you think of your group leader?

Juno was professional and approachable in equal measure. He was clearly passionate about his homeland and shared his knowledge and love of his country throughout the trip, introducing us to the history, culture, geographic and geological significance of a country situated in such an environmentally sensitive area. Throughout the trip he dealt with local people, hotel staff, mountain guides and porters with a gentle authority and it became clear that he is well known and well respected in the region.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

The areas we visited were fascinating and beautiful. There was a lot of driving which given the miles covered was unavoidable and the train journey provided a change from road. Be prepared for plenty of early mornings - this certainly is not a trip for those looking to rest and recharge batteries! - It is "full on" but worth every bleary eyed morning. You will meet lots of local people eager to meet travellers, so be prepared to adopt "celebratory status" as you inevitably will be the centre of lots of people's photos!

Is there anything else you would like to add?

We have trekked and climbed at altitude a number of times previously but would still rate Mount Rinjani as one of the toughest final ascents we have done. The terrain (loose scree) makes for tough going and the dust flying into your eyes from people scree running down is not pleasant. But achieving the summit makes it all worthwhile. The area of Mount Rinjani is designated as a National Park with, one would hope some degree of protected status. With this in mind, we were horrified and saddened by the copious amount of trash and human waste accumulating on the approaching trails - and indeed on the summit itself. This made for a disappointing experience and surely some work must be done with local people and the authorities to stem the increasingly unhygienic and environmentally disastrous results of trekking tourism before it it too late.

    Steven Groves

This trip has a bit of everything and is ideal for anyone looking for some challenging trekking combined with the chance to explore this country and its cultural heritage including several awe inspiring temples including the UNESCO world heritage site at Borobudur. A lot is crammed into the itinerary and in order to do so there are several very early starts but these are always rewarded with spectacular views at Sunrise. The Indonesian people were extremely friendly wherever we went

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

Seeing the Sunrise shortly after reaching the summit of Mt Rinjani was fantastic. Whilst I found the trek up from our overnight camp to the summit hard, the sense of achievement and the views on offer once there were a great reward for the effort. On a totally different tack, the trip to Borobudur was also truly amazing in its own way .

What did you think of your group leader?

Juno was very friendly and helpful and dealt with the various challenges and demands made of him by the various people in the group. The whole trip and organisation went well so no issues on that front. However it is fair to say that his fluency in English could be improved and perhaps he was rather too laid back and in his desire not to offend people lost the opportunity to be assertive when it was appropriate.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Yes- do it! This is a great trip but you should be prepared for several long days as to fully enjoy the itinerary there are several very early ie 2 or 3 am starts but these early starts are fully rewarded and worth it. Some of the walking is hard and hence the challenging definition and you should be fit and fully prepared for the physical effort. We were very fortunate that the weather with one exception on the final day was very good ( dry and hot) but on the occasion it rained it was an horrendous downpour and worth being prepared for that potential.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

Embrace the culture, the food and the people of Indonesia. Be prepared for the rather manic traffic particularly on Java which while it seems chaotic and dangerous, somewhat surprisingly seems to work and keeps moving. The sun can be strong so to avoid sunburn take plenty of sun cream and cover up . I regret not having taken either the Bali or Gili trip extensions but was very glad to have done the day trip to Gili Island from Sengetti - well worth the effort .

    A true volcanic adventure

I have just returned from this trip and was truly blown away by the dramatic landscapes we visited and the amount we managed to see in just over two weeks. Every volcano and island visited was different from the last; ranging from the barren moonscape of Bromo to the forest-clad slopes of Rinjani and the lush green terraces of Java. We really enjoyed having many of these trekking routes to ourselves - being the only group walking along the ridge of Mt Bromo made us all feel like intrepid explorers!

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

Summiting Mt Rinjani at sunrise just in time to admire the shadow of the volcano on the sky - an illusion I didn't even know was possible. The views were incredible and we could map out all of the surrounding islands with their peaks of volcanoes interupting the cloudline. The sunsets from above the clouds on Mt Rinjani were also incredibly spectacular.

What did you think of your group leader?

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

It's worth packing some thermals for the camping nights just in case there is a cold-spell. And a small scarf for when climbing Mt Ijen, the sulpher makes for spectacular viewing but isn't so great on the nose!

Is there anything else you would like to add?

Indonesia really is a country of so much variety. Although this is a trekking trip there was still plenty of opportunity to learn about the different islands that we visited and of course to sample the delicious local cuisine - the satay was amazing at every stop!

    indonesia volcano trekking

Brilliant trip, well organised to make the most of the time we had. Some amazing photographs and memories!

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

Sunrise on top of Mount Rinjani. We'd worked blooming hard to get there but the atmosphere and the views were brilliant.

What did you think of your group leader?

Juno was very friendly and tried hard to ensure everyone was having a good time. He had incredible knowledge about the country and the places we visited and definitely enriched the experience. His English could have been better and perhaps he underestimated our desire for instructions, but overall I enjoyed his company.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Things happen in their own time in Indonesia - don't expect the trip to run like clockwork. Some facilities are a bit basic and Indonesian attitudes to caring for the environment are somewhat different to ours. That said, there are some truly amazing places, the people are very friendly and if you relax and take the rough with the smooth, you'll have an amazing time.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

We usually self organise - this was our first group trip - and the main thing I was looking for from Exodus was something different to what we could have arranged ourselves. We definitely got that. The logistics alone of travelling around the country made us feel like we'd got value for money. The company wasn't bad either!

    Indonesian Volcanos Trek

A full on introduction to Indonesia, first few days the focus is on temples and the cultural side of things then when you feel the need for a good walk you get the Rinjani trek after which the beach is just perfect.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

Watching the sun go down when camped on the crater ridge at Rinjani was pretty good, that was followed by a perfect starry night with comets and then sunrise on the top of Rinjani. Not a lot of sleep! but worth it.

What did you think of your group leader?

Juno was lovely. Very knowledgeable about all the cultures/ religions of Indonesia. Very representative of the Indonesian character...always smiling and very gentle in manner. He is softly spoken so gather round for any briefings.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Take light weight ankle gaiters for Mt Rinjani. My boots were full of pumice! I loved the Indonesian food but found I needed some low G.I snacks, Mt Rinjani is a two bag of nuts walk.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

When you get to Senggigi you deserve a post Rinjani massage. You can go posh at the hotel spa (approx. £15 for an hours full body massage) or for just a fiver there is Iren, a lovely lady with a massage bench on the beach, she will soothe your aches and pains as you listen to the gentle slosh of waves. The Gili extension was ace, a total chill.
