    MONT BLANC WINTER ACTIVITY WEEK

I had a tremendous Christmas holiday, beautiful scenery, great group of people, good tour leader, done  load of winter activities within a short period of time and enjoyed it every minutes.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

The dog sledging was the highlight of my trip, it was a bit scarely for the beginning to handle three huskies on your own sledge however, Phillipe kindly explained to us from the beginning how to ride a sledge and how to get up in case you fell of, unfortunately it happened in my case, my sledged hit a tree when we tried turn left and I remembered that he said we need to hold the break first before turning the sledge back and then carry on, which I did and I was glad that I managed it without any injury.

What did you think of your group leader?

Emma is wonderful and very helpful, she is very knowledgeable of the local area and alps, she ensured every one enjoyed their winter activities even for the first timer.  On next day, we tried half day cross country classic ski and then snow shoes in the afternoon for a taster, the following day Julia taught us the technique on cross country ski and skate.  Finally and not least, Lindsay taught us how to use the snow-shoeing for uphill walk.  At the end of the week, we were able to enjoy the winter activities like a pro in such a short period of time.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

This is not a relax holiday, physical fitness is needed if you want to try all activities that offer on the itinerary and I would suggest do some yoga and body pump is a good start, as it will definitely more enjoyable to have a certain level of fitness.  Make sure you bring your camera and extra memory card as the scenery is beautiful and stunning.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

I would recommend this to everyone even for the first timer on winter activities, you will never know what you could achieve at the end of the holiday, beautiful scenery, great people and not to mention that improved your physical fitness too.

    MONT BLANC WINTER ACTIVITY WEEK

I had a brillant week in the Alps and would recommend it to anyone.  The scenery was beautiful and the group leader was great.  It had an excellent variety of activities and was a fantastic way of getting a taster for a variety of winter activites.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

On the last day we did a snow shoe walk and had some fantastic views of Mount Blanc.  Very inspirational.

What did you think of your group leader?

Oliver was fantastic.  He had endless jokes and kept us all entertained.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Some of the activities did require a bit of physical fitness and it is probably worth considering getting a bit on the fit side, as it would make the whole experience a bit more enjoyable to have a certain level of fitness.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

This was an excellent opportunity to get a bit of a taster for a variety of winter activities.  The whole experience was ace, the region is beautiful and certianly a great way of spending a week

    MONT BLANC WINTER ACTIVITY WEEK

This was a brilliant holiday. Lots of fun with great people, stunning scenery and excellent activities. It was well planned and executed, and I have already recommended it to my friends!

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

The dog-sledding was amazing (it was on my bucket list, so that's been ticked off), although be warned...you get really cold feet. Snow-shoeing was great fun, not too hard and a good laugh. We stopped for a drink at the most beautiful restaurant on the hillside above the chalet, and as we walked down again the ice crystals hanging in the air made it look like we were walking through glitter. I've never seen anything like it.

What did you think of your group leader?

Oliver is fantastic. He is so enthusiastic (and tells the corniest jokes). He always helps you out with advice on all the activities, even though some of them are really tough. He has great knowledge of the area, having lived there for 20 years and gives great advice on things to do on your free day.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

The grading of leisurely to moderate is mostly right, there are some leisurely bits like the train ride, and the horse sleigh ride, but don't think for one minute it's going to all be easy! Some of the cross country skiing is particularly hard-work, but having said that, there are loads of other options for activities, so you can do as much or as little as you like.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

Before you go, you will wonder why so many people comment on Elaine's cake....it really is the most incredible cake. They are huge, and different every day, and delicious. Oh, and Dylan the dog is sooo cute!

    MONT BLANC WINTER ACTIVITY WEEK

Fantastic trip, I want to go again!

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

Learning the art of cross country skiing, then relaxing in the hot tub and eating Elaine's fantastic homemade cake.

What did you think of your group leader?

Oliver was an excellent teacher and leader. I had never been skiing before, but was able to learn quickly and really enjoyed it. The trip had an excellent variety of activities and Oliver had excellent local knowledge so the trip ran smoothly everyday.

    MONT BLANC WINTER ACTIVITY WEEK

This was an excellent introduction  to a winter sports holiday. We had a super group and Oliver was an excellent leader / instructor. It was great to have someone else do all the organisation (ski passes, tunnel passes) and know where to go depending on the current weather conditions.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

The cafe / chalet overlooking the Mont Blanc mountain range where the snow mobile dropped us off on the Friday of our trip was wonderful, not to mention to vin chaud and the nibbles.

What did you think of your group leader?

Oliver was helpful and calm and very knowledgable about the Alps and all aspects of skiing, walking and climbing. He introduced us to lots of winter sports and in the evening we got to sample his favourite film "The Mountain" with Spencer Tracy so we could pick up on his references during the week

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Make sure that you have a lightweight rucksack and a lightweight water bottle for the week.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

Great trip, fabulous scenery and a real break from work and the day to day grind !

    MONT BLANC WINTER ACTIVITY WEEK

A trip that suppased my expectations. Lots of different activities and challenges, snow, good company, great accomadation and location and wonderful hosts in Elaine and Oliver who made you feel relaxed and totally at home at Chalet Savoy.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

Everything was super. Probably the snow shoeing and XC skiing for me but everything was good. Skating on what seemed to be our own private ice rink, being pulled along at 100mph by the huskies sledging, being slobered over by the St Bernards and well the views of the alps  must be a highlight as well especially of Mont Blanc.....  The food and the homemade cakes waiting everyday for us on getting home after a day of activity, the hot tub to relax in and look at the mountains with a glass of wine, the snow itself, our hosts and accomadation..............I could go on so many.

What did you think of your group leader?

Oliver was brillant. Full of local knowledge  about different places we visited and an exellent teacher  with lots of advice when trying the new activities. Was able to pitch it at all levels from beginners to those who had done some of the things before and very patient with us all. A true master at organising us all and the jokes...they have to be heard!!!! Elaine's cakes and cooking is a legend and having  cake withdrawl symptoms already!

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

hard one - running gear good as need layers. Can get quite hot after 10 minutes or so of snow shoeing or XC skiing and have to peel off.  Need a "buff" and a hat and gloves with a second pair underneath so again can strip off. If I was going again would take a small thermos flask for coffee on the mountain and my croc slippers!  On reflection I probably took too much. No fancy evening clothes needed at all which  was great!

Is there anything else you would like to add?

I recommend this to anyone wanting a taste of winter sport activities.  Just enough of everything. I came on my own leaving my husband and son at home and had a ball - great group and for a "one off" winter holiday was just what I wanted. On day off a few did downhill skiing and had a great time and I did more XC and some went to a spa so something for everyone. Oliver helped us all sort this out.  Holiday may seem expensive on the surface but really good value for money and spent hardly anything else......just brilliant and want to go back!

    MONT BLANC WINTER ACTIVITY WEEK

A very enjoyable active winter holiday.  The range of activities was excellent and our hosts Elaine and Oliver could not do enough to ensure we all had a great time.  Would recommend.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

I particularly loved the cross country skiing and snow shoe walking as the scenery is very inspiring.  We were lucky in that we had clear blue skies and sunshine.  The views were majestic.  Relaxing in the hot tub in the evening with views over the mountains was also a highlight and will be remembered fondly now I am home in the greyness of britain.

What did you think of your group leader?

Oliver ran all the activities and was excellent. He is very experienced and got us all skiing very quickly even though some of us were absolute beginners.  Elaine ran the chalet and her cooking is legendary - a particular highlight is the fantastic cakes.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Take layers as the weather these days is unpredictable.  For us it was very cold in the morning and hot in the afternoon, so it is important to take layers.  Do not forget sunglasses or sunscreen

Is there anything else you would like to add?

A very enjoyable holiday.  Lots of fun, good food, excellent activities and great people.  What more could you ask for.

    MONT BLANC WINTER ACTIVITY WEEK

This is a fantastic holiday for meeting new people, trying new things and experiencing the beautiful Alps. The skiing, snowshoeing and other activities provide a good day's workout but also allow plenty of time for relaxation and appreciating the stunning surroundings. It's a real spirit-uplifter.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

I was a bit apprehensive about the dog sledding. When we arrived, the huskies were excitedly howling and the slope looked steep. 'Phillipe' commented on the icy conditions and said that the men should drive the sleds first as the dogs would be too much for the ladies! When my turn came to drive the sled I was convinced that I would come flying off but managed to stay on and enjoy the exhilarating ride.

What did you think of your group leader?

Oliver and Elaine are superb hosts. Oliver had us all cross country skiing after half a day's practice, and most people had never tried it before. We even mastered both classic and skate methods. Oliver has a knack for making people feel good about themselves so that you're not self conscious or worrying about your technique, you're only focusing on moving freely and enjoying it. And when we came back from a hard day's activity Nog (the cat) was waiting to greet us, there was a huge cake in the upstairs sitting room and, to follow, a delicious three course dinner cooked by Elaine.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

I would not recommend eating large amounts before you go on this holiday as you will find that you can't resist the afternoon cake, even if you try very hard...

Is there anything else you would like to add?

Get in quick and book this holiday! Hopefully Elaine and Oliver will continue to run this holiday for a very long time but in case they don't I would book it now. No matter what age you are, you will enjoy many laughs, the best dinners you've had for a long time and lots of encouragement with your skiing. And having sampled the atmosphere of the nearby celebrity bar at the Granges D'en Haut, I can honestly say that the hospitality at Chalet Savoy is far superior.

    MONT BLANC WINTER ACTIVITY WEEK

A fantastic holiday; stunning scenery and a lovely location. Oliver and Elaine, the "cake extraordinaire", at the Chalet Savoy, made everyone feel welcome. Be prepared for food, fresh air and plenty of exercise!

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

Learning how to cross-country ski (classic). The trip through the woods on the snowmobile with the view of Mont Blanc and the snow-covered chalet, where our mulled wine awaited, was splendid!

What did you think of your group leader?

Our group leader, Oliver Ensor, is - well - a bit of a legend really. He has patience and humour and boundless energy. Must be the mountain air and Elaine's cakes.  We thought aching muscles would cause us to groan but Oliver's corny jokes just hedged them!

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

I'd never been on a winter holiday before. Hadn't done any kind of skiing or winter activities. This was a great entree and having learned how to x-country ski (and fall over) I'd definitely like to do more of this. This trip is an informal week, great fun, plenty of variety ... and did I mention Elaine's cakes? I wouldn't take what I fondly call "padded pants" again as I got quite hot (we had stonkin' weather) when cross country skiing. I did wear a pair of waterproof walking trousers over some thermal long-johns (dead sexy) and this was much better. A peaked cap is definitely a good idea, especially for the snowshoe walk on the last day ... I forgot mine.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

I felt like chuffin' Julie Andrews up on them mountains and how I didn't burst into "The Hills are Alive ... " I just don't know! Do yourself a favour and book this trip. It's marvellous!

    MONT BLANC WINTER ACTIVITY WEEK

Great variety of activities.  Chalet Savoy in the perfect base - great food, hosts and sauna!

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

20km of Classic Cross-Country ski-ing in the Val Feret - our second day on skis. Completing all the Cross Country tracks around Chamonix - our third day on skis.

What did you think of your group leader?

Oliver is a great guide - balancing instruction with encouragement - shame about the jokes... Elaine's cooking is excellent - missing those cakes...

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Make sure you're reasonably fit. Take gear for cold - you may not need it, but we had temperatures as low as -15 some days: yet for some reason the trip notes suggest that thermal underwear is not required!  Lose weight before coming - there will be plenty of opportunity to put on the pounds ;-)

    MONT BLANC WINTER ACTIVITY WEEK

We returned to this phantastic region having enjoyed the summer Mont Blanc Highlights trip in 2007 and it won't be our last time. We loved the mix of winter activities, the new hot tub and Oliver's & Elaine's hospitality.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

The dog sledging trip and hot chocolate Italian style (you need a spoon to eat it!)

What did you think of your group leader?

Oliver has great leadership skills ensuring all enjoy their holiday to the full. His sense of humor lightens up the days. The holiday would not be the same without Elaine's yummy cooking and all the other hard work.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Be prepared to give all the activities a go - you may surprise yourself how fit you are and what you can achieve.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

If all else fails there is usually a cafe somewhere nearby.

    MONT BLANC WINTER ACTIVITY WEEK

We did the Mont Blanc Highlights in Sept - that exceeded our expectations and gave us the impetus to do the Winter activities. Neither of us had done a Winter holiday before but we felt complete confidence in Oliver ( and Elaine) to look after us.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

The dog-sledding The realisation that snow-shoeing gave us freedom on the mountains

What did you think of your group leader?

We had total confidence in Oliver. He met every criterion for excellent mountain leadership plus the bonuses of warmth, good humour and real care for each person in the party.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Is there anything else you would like to add?

Elaine's cakes (and the ponchos) were wonderful!

    MONT BLANC WINTER ACTIVITY WEEK

This was a very enjoyable holiday, offering the chance to to experience several winter activities. Based on this holiday I really want to continue with cross country skiing.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

For me the most inspirational moment was being able to ski around Val Ferret without supervision.

What did you think of your group leader?

Oliver and Elaine were great people. Oliver was patient with people, always had pun to lighten the mood and was clearly enthusiastic about cross country skiing. Elaine provided great food for us, including  MASSIVE cakes for afternoon tea.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Pack lots of layers of clothing! While you're doing these activities you will get very warm, but by the same token, you will need warm clothes for the start of the day.   You will be well fed when you stay at Chalet Savoy, and if you gave them warning about food preferences they were very kind at trying to accomodate them. The vegetarians in our group were pleasantly surprised with the variety of food they were offered, it wasn't a parade of cheese, cheese and more cheese at evening meals.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

This holiday does require reasonable fitness - but I had a great time despite being portly. The schedule is good where you effectively have 2 heavy days, followed by two days of lighter exertion and then back to the tougher stuff.

    MONT BLANC WINTER ACTIVITY WEEK

the accomodation was too small for the number of people expected.  For example  people (the number booked on the holiday) could not sit in the lounge at one time.  The rooms and especially the bathrooms were small and very cramped, def not suitable for two people sharing.  Despite the fact that some people had not arrived till the small hours of the morning (due to flight delays) the whole house was still woken up with a cow bell at 7am!  Def not a nice way to start a christmas holiday break.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

my two days down hill skiing witha  fantastic instructor recommended by Oliver (not on the itinerary)

What did you think of your group leader?

    very experienced if slightly regimental

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

this is a very regimented trip if you are expecting a relaxing week over christmas with plenty of time to enjoy the sights and smells of a small ski village in France - it is not for you!
