    OK, but not great

Walking needs to better reflect the Challenging grade. Too safe, too often at low level, no scrambling, not high enough. However, the scenary is amazing, and at least one of the walks was spot on.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

    The high mountain scenery.

What did you think of your group leader?

Pierre is very solid. I liked him enormously. Passion in abundance.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Pick another, more challenging trip if you really want that grade. If you are happy with easy, you will be fine.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

Just a quick note to my fellow, mid Sep 15 travellers. Thanks. You were a great crowd. I have some very special memories, and some lasting friendships as a result.

    Return to the Pyrenees

This holiday based at St-Lary-Soulan in the Vallee d'Aure is in an lovely part of the 'green' Pyrenees . It is an excellent base for walks onto the high meadows and mountains. Our group of like minded people ( 13 in total ) got on well and I had a very enjoyable week. Decent walks in beautiful scenery but 3 out of 5 of the walks were from the hotel and did not allow us to get into the really high places. We were there for the challenging week but I would question that description. Les Arches hotel was of good standard and the meals ( all breakfasts and 2 evening meals ) were all satisfactory. On the nights when we ate out at our expense there was a rather limited choice of restaurants due to us being there at the end of the summer season and before the start of their busy winter skiing season. Allow appro 30 euros for 3 course dinner excluding drinks. The food was of a good standard but not too much variety available .

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

Our walk on the Thursday to the Port de Barroude ( 2534m ) reaching the border with Spain - a long and high walk into pristine mountain scenery.

What did you think of your group leader?

Our French leader, Pierre, was excellent. His English was not perfect but there was no problem understanding him. He clearly has a deep love of his Pyrennean homeland and he imparted this to the group. Very knowledgable, conscientious and thorough in ensuring our safety .He was frustrated that our itinerary did not give him the opportunity to get us to more remote and higher mountain scenery.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

I went with Exodus to the former base in Aix les Thermes which is much further to the east. It is my view that the walks from there were better ( meeting the challenging description ) but this was only possible because we were often transported to a higher starting point for the walks. In St -Lary, 3 of our 5 walks started from the hotel ( valley level ) so much of the time we were walking through meadows/ farmland.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

Overall, I had a good holiday which was helped by being with a great group of people and excellent leader ; however, compared to Aix les Thermes ( where we had more included meals ) it was significantly more expensive. Everyone will make up their own minds about the definition of challenging but for me this was not met on the week I was there. There is no doubt in my mind that St - Lary is an excellent location for mountain walking but the potential for truly challenging mountain walking can only be realised if transport is provide on all 5 walking days to higher starting points.

Walking in French Pyrenees Level 3

The French Pyrenees is stunningly beautiful region and the hike was extremely well planned and organised by the group leader who also provided a lot information on the nature, history and culture of the region linking to the walks.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

In addition to the beautiful landscape and hiking itself, the group leader could explain to us all about flowers, trees and geology as we walked. He also shared with us passionately the historical, cultural, environmental and socio-economic context of the region and it was like a combination of hiking and very interesting lecture on spot.

What did you think of your group leader?

He provided us with detailed information and map of each walk. He also prepared useful information on restaurants and optional activities for a day off. He was always conscious about well-being of all participants. The leader is originated in the region and he is passionate in sharing with us his love of his native land and culture.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

For those who look for more than hiking, this would be an interesting walk as the leader can provide a lot of information linking to the walk (nature, history, culture, etc.)

Is there anything else you would like to add?

It is worthwhile to spend a day to visit the town of Toulouse for sightseeing.

    walking french pyrenees

this is a very good trip that exceeded my expectations. good hikes, good hotel with little swimming pool, many food options in an interesting town and an excellent leader. did not notice any disturbing construction mentioned in some reviews.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

actually it was our leader pierre plus meeting allegedly ferocious pyrenees mountain dogs way up there. more like big puppies.

What did you think of your group leader?

pierre was one of the best best group leaders i ever had implanting lot of local knowledge about plants, birds and politics. also flipping and adjusting our itinerary when bad weather moved in.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

some restaurants are expensive but there are plenty of others, good and reasonable. not good place for vegetarians.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

    Walking in the Pyrenees

We selected the "challenging" option in the expectation of some high mountain walking. However of the five walking days, three were in the hills surrounding the town of St Lary. Only one of the days was a true mountain walking day - Port de Barroude (2534m) - when we walked up a valley to the border with Spain. I felt that the real mountain potential of the Pyrenees was not fully explored.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

The walk to Port de Barroude with an ascent/descent of about 1350m. This took us through woodland, pasture and mountain scenery passing lakes before reaching the col. Views of Griffon and Egyptian Vultures, Lammergeir (I saw one dropping a bone), peregrines and marmots.

What did you think of your group leader?

Pierre is enthusiastic about the mountains. He was keen to tell us about the landscape, history, culture, economy, flora and fauna of the Pyrenees. Always willing to answer questions, imparting his knowledge of the Pyrenees to the group added so much more to our treks. His English is better than he thinks - he was soon understanding the British "humour sense"!

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Although advertised as "challenging" I would say that only one day was challenging, three days were moderate and the other day falling somewhere between. When discussing the trip with Pierre it was clear that he would like to lead a more adventurous trip.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

Hotel "Les Arches" at St Lary fell short of my three star expectation. The bedroom was small and had neither shutters nor air-conditioning. Consequently, it became rather warm! However, the reception areas were comfortable and the chef excellent. A good selection was available at breakfasts.
