Hendaye is the most south-westerly town in France, a popular seaside tourist resort by the Atlantic coast, it lays on the right bank of the River Bidasoa, which marks the border with Irun in Spain. The town is arranged in two distinguishable parts; on one side the old town and on the other the new, developed around the large sandy coastline.
Short transfer by private bus towards the Pyrenees to climb Xoldokogagna (550m), with spectacular views of the bay of Hendaye.
After a short transfer by private minibus, we join the very beginning of the GR10, a famous walking trail that crosses the Pyrenees from one coast to another. This walk takes place about 15 km inland from the coast. With a bit of luck we will see the local horses 'Pottocks'. These horses have trait of being small and were traditionally used to work in the mines (Pottock means small in Basque language). Here we will walk to the top of Xoldokogagna, the last French Pyrenean mountain, which offers superb views of the bay of Hendaye from the top. Local bus to Bidart. From here follow scenic coastal trail to quaint town of Saint Jean de Luz. Free time to explore; afternoon take public bus to Hendaye.
Short boat ride to Hondarribia, Spain. Enjoy coastal walk with swimming opportunities.
In the morning we take a shuttle boat to cross the River Bidasoa to Hondarribia in Spain (10 minutes transfer). One of the prettiest towns in the Basque Country, it has a colourful fishing port and is rich in both architecture and gastronomy. From here we follow a coastal walk that offers lots of swimming opportunities if the weather permits so don't forget to bring your swimming stuff! The terrain is varied with some sections in pine tree forests and others walking on sand, as we progress we encounter some beautiful views of Cap Figuier and the turquoise sea. We will finish the walk back in Hondarribia, and if time permits we will be able to enjoy some tapas and sangria before taking the shuttle back to Hendaye and the hotel. Free day; relax on the large sandy beach of Hendaye or travel further a field to spend the day in Bilbao with the chance to visit the world renowned Guggenheim museum.
For the free day you could choose to explore Hendaye and visit the 1864 Abbadia Castle observatory and park, visit the Sainte Anne Chapel and the Saint Vincent Church or simply relax on the beach.
Morning coastal walk to Biarritz; free afternoon to enjoy this world famous surfing resort.
After a short journey by public transport to Guetary, we will enjoy a very pleasant coastal walk following the 'sentier du littoral' to Biarritz, the world-famous surfing mecca and from here we will be able to see the surfers in action! We will have a free afternoon to explore this luxurious seaside resort, which came to fame in the 19th century when Empress Eugenie (the wife of Napoleon the third) fell in love with it and built a palace on the beach. This is now the world class Hotel du Palais.
Train ride to the harbour town of Pasaia, Spain. Walk to San Sebastian for magnificent views of the Atlantic Ocean and a short visit to the town.
For our last full day, we will enjoy a fabulous walk in Spain to San Sebastian. In the morning we will take the train to the harbour town of Pasaia. From here the walk follows the coast and offers magnificent views of the Atlantic ocean. We will have time for a short visit of the town, some tapas and drink before returning to Hendaye by train.
