    Walking on the Greek Islands

Altogether a very enjoyable and varied holiday. The walks were excellent and not too challenging. Scenery was out of this world and so was the weather. Ferry journeys very enjoyable and the length did not bother me. Very friendly group of travellers. All in all a very successful holiday.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

Walking the Bysantine Way on Paros.

What did you think of your group leader?

Excellent - couldn't have been better. Very friendly, thoughtful, knowledgeable, interested, kind and extremely well organised. Thank you Thanos for a wonderful holiday.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Book and go on this wonderful trip

Is there anything else you would like to add?

Have made new friends and am looking forward to my next Exodus trip

Walking the Cyclades - Greek Islands

An excellent week of walking interspersed with sightseeing and gastronomy. Well led and organised, Leisurely pace. A good holiday.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

Walking along the rim of the Santorini caldera - spectacular views all the way.

What did you think of your group leader?

Cecile was an excellent guide, led the walks well and more importantly skillfully organised transport through the week, ushering our group on and off numerous ferries and buses. Cecile organised a side trip "extra" to Akrotiri - this was a useful and interesting "filler" when we had a little spare time on Santorini. The group was also excellent !!!

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

This tour is correctly graded as leisurely - a very appropriate pace for the heat of the late Greek summer (1st week of September). The walk along the Santorini caldera rim was for us the highlight of the week, we only took the bus half way back, and picked up the path again to take in the views in the afternoon sun. Just beneath the highest point on the rim, their is a safe path that goes down to a lower mesa jutting out into the caldera for excellent views.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

We were not on the group flight, so had some time to explore Athens by adding an extra day on at the end; well worth doing (Acropolis, Museums, Kerameikos, Ancient Agora etc). Plenty of opportunities for island sunsets ... don't miss the sun setting through the great arch of the Temple of Apollo on Naxos !!!

    Greek Islands Holiday

The itinerary, organisation, transport were well planned and executed. The leader knowledgable and charismatic, sharing her considerable knowledge of the flora and fauna and of the islands and the way of life of the local people. The hotel on Naxos was disappointing, the breakfast frugal. Fresher and a better quality and quantity could be bought at nearby places for 5 euros

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

I particularly enjoyed the visit to the archaeological site on Santorini and my own private follow up to see the artefacts in the museum in Fira, the main town.

What did you think of your group leader?

    Dynamic ,knowledgable and charismatic.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Although I had checked what the temperature might be in the islands in early September, before I booked the holiday, it was much hotter than I was expecting. Many of the islanders told me that although it was unusually hot, and that late October would probably be a better time for a walking holiday.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

No, that's it. An enjoyable time and I would certainly return to the islands.

    Walking in the Greek islands

    Very Leisurely

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

being on the new cone forming in the centre of Santorini

What did you think of your group leader?

good command of multiple languages, had hard job on Santorini because of hotel site. Generally very affable.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Plenty of high factor SPF30 minimum sun protection.

    Walking on the Greek Islands

A great trip, beautiful walks, stunning scenary, good culture, simple-small-friendly hotels in perfect locations, knowledgeable leader - couldn't have asked for more from my first Exodus walking holiday.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

Climbing up to a high point with just a few of the group memebers, great views, great company, no other tourists - perfect.

What did you think of your group leader?

Really good, he knew his stuff, was caring and entertaining.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Be aware that the ferry journey's do take up a bit of time, but it's definately worth it to see the 3 different islands.

    Delightful Islands

An excellent trip , with some lovely walking and tasty food and good wine! The walks were just right considering how hot is was.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

I loved Paros and Naxos. Both islands are relatively unspoilt , lovely countryside , with great views. The bouzouki evening that we went to on Naxos in the castle courtyard was a highlight for me.

What did you think of your group leader?

Cecile is a great leader. Knowledgable, sociable, organised and a lovely person. I couldn't have asked for better. If I find her leading a future trip of mine I will be delighted.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Is there anything else you would like to add?

Santorini, whilst on everyone's wish list, was interesting but far too touristy and busy for me. If I went to the area again I would spend more time on Paros and Naxos and miss Santorini out. However the trip to Volcano ,Nea Kemeni was great with fantastic all round views of the caldera. I think Greece has lots to offer, please take note Exodus and put on some more trips there.

Enjoyable Walks in a Lovely Country

A very enjoyable trip with a great group of people and a terrific guide. Walking in the Greek Islands was an experience I would recommend and a wonderful way to see some beautiful islands and landscapes. The variety of walking and cruising along the ferries was a nice balance to the trip.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

Island of Naxos was most inspiring and definitely most memorable, probably one of my favourite islands we visited.

What did you think of your group leader?

Cecile was an admirable leader with a lovely personality and excellent knowledge of the islands.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

June is rather hot for walking, although it wouldn't put me off from attending the trip, I did find some walks more difficult due to the heat and lack of a breeze.

    Walking on the Greek Islands

My first group walking experience and I thoroughly enjoyed joining a group of like-minded people for a very well organised holiday. The islands were beautiful, the weather kind and the balance of walking, sight-seeing and relaxing just about right.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

Santorini delivered spectacular jaw-dropping scenery but I loved Naxos. I thought the hinterland of Naxos was so beautiful and Naxos Town very interesting. This was the place I want to return to.

What did you think of your group leader?

Thanos was great - his knowledge of Greek History and Religion was very impressive. He knew everyone and was obviously very much at home on the islands. Best of all was his choice of restaurants and bars in the evenings - they just got better and better. A good leader who also knows when to fade into the background.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

I found the stony paths quite challenging so, if you have knee or ankle issues, good walking boots are advisable. The ferry rides are a bit tedious so a good book is essential.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

I was on my own but had a really enjoyable 8 day holiday.

    WALKING ON THE GREEK ISLANDS

A good intro to getting to and around the Greek Islands. The hotels were adequate and in good locations. The bathrooms were a real challenge, especially the one in Naxos.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

The Fira to Oia walk on Santorini was spectacular and we had great weather for our 5km easy walk....the scenery just kept getting more spectacular as you got closer to Oia. Picture postcard stuff. We were kindly invited by locals jamming in Lefkes to a traditional music festival in Paros, in the town of Naoussa, and it was fun just people-watching. The dancing by young and old was a lot of fun to see. I'm glad I went as it was just so Greek!

What did you think of your group leader?

Cecile was a very friendly and helpful guide and gave a good insight into being an expat in Greece. I thought she guided the walks well with the different speed levels. Good communication at times did not always work well as I think our group was a straggly bunch but Cecile did her best to keep us all informed of the group's plans. She booked us a fabulous guide at the Akrotiri archaeological site, very informative and well worth the trip. Exodus should really include it not as an option but as an inclusion: our entire group went to see it.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

September was a great time to visit Santorini, Paros and Naxos: warm but not unbearable and tourist numbers are much lower. There is a music festival held at the Naxos castle in August and September so I recommend taking in a show. The organiser was a real character and you get to try several homemade alcoholic beverages as part of your ticket price.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

The trip didn't start too well when Exodus changed the starting hotel from Athens to Rafina a few days before the start of the trip and I was spending a few days in Athens before the trip started so am glad I saw the email before I left home. The way Exodus handled this last minute change was pitiful as they offered no explanation or transportation to Rafina, or even a map or description of where it is. At first I assumed it was just another suburb in the centre of Athens but when I could not find it on the Athens tourist map, I googled it. Athens and Rafina are not close at all so this is a major change to the itinerary, not just a hotel change, as the group never actually even set foot into Athens city proper. If a taxi had been provided, I could have checked out of my Athens hotel and arrived during daylight hours to enjoy the seaside hotel instead of arriving around 9pm. With no assistance or advice from Exodus, I worked out that it was easier and 35 Euros cheaper to travel back to the Airport to meet the Exodus group arriving and join their airport transfer than it was to get to the hotel in Rafina directly. I pointed this out by email to the Exodus representative and she allowed me to join the transfer even though I was not on the flight. A subsequent email from Exodus then followed, mentioning the approximate taxi fare to Rafina but no offer of transportation. Later we found out that some members had their taxi fare to the hotel in Rafina paid for by Exodus as their travel agent complained on their behalf, but no offer was made to me and to another lady who also arrived earlier in Athens. Furthermore we found out the reason for the hotel/city change was that the local company did not book enough rooms in the Athens hotel so it was too late to book more rooms as they were now full. I thought that is what I pay Exodus to do...to follow up on their sub-contractors. Consequently, we had to take a catamaran to Naxos instead of the usual larger ferry and, although it was faster by an hour, it was most unpleasant with the rough seas. Most of the group felt very queasy as there is no outside to go to on catamarans. Having the catamaran staff walk around many times throughout the entire journey with vomit bags in hand was most reassuring indeed!!!

    WALKING ON THE GREEK ISLANDS

A really enjoyable week, The walks are easy/intermediate. Food was good. Hotels were satisfactory & the people were great company.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

The Parthenon.  Its on the a world heritage site for a reason.

What did you think of your group leader?

Fantastic! Very knowledgeable, very friendly and approachable.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Bring walking/trekking gear, bring sun cream & hat. All hotels have basic facilities but they all have wifi.

    WALKING ON THE GREEK ISLANDS

A wonderful way to explore 3 very different islands.  Our guide Thanos was extremely knowledgeable and brought the history of each island alive for us and his enthusiasm was infectious.  Definitely a leisurely trip with a ferry ride every other day (look out for dolphins) and time to explore the towns and laze on a few beaches - very welcome after our walk in the heat on Paros.  Great food and lots of it- Thanos was very helpful with recommendations for local dishes/drinks.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

exploring the beautiful islands and seeing the pace of life on Paros and Naxos, lovely atmosphere and places to return to.  The scenery on Santorini is spectacular, hence it is very popular with tourists - fine if you can stay away from the visitors from the cruise ships, the walk was amazing (it was the second time I had done this) and we stayed longer in Ia and it emptied out in the later afternoon.

What did you think of your group leader?

Excellent, thorough and a very high standard of service - both from himself and those around us in each of the restaurants.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

it was easy to add extra nights at the start/end of the trip and well worth it to see Athens - Jason Inn was very central and exploring from there was easy with the main sights all within walking distance - very pleasant as the centre of Athens is mostly pedestrianised.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

a great group made this a wonderful trip

    WALKING ON THE GREEK ISLANDS

A thoroughly enjoyable trip with plenty to see and a variety of experiences. As a walker the trip needs to have one more good walk but if you accept that the holiday is only graded as easy then you will not be disappointed. The walk along the Santorini coast was excellent as was the walk on Naxos. Be prepared for an expensive week as food prices in Greece are rather high.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

The two main walks on Santorini and Naxos. Paros is a very quaint town with lovely narrow streets and a beautiful cathedral.

What did you think of your group leader?

Excellent. Thanos changeed the itinery to make sure the weather and ferry strikes did not impose on our week.

    WALKING ON THE GREEK ISLANDS

Awesome, a wonderful expierence captured in my memory to last for a lifetime. The wildflowers, the scent of citrus, lovely catus and just the overall panoramic views of the islands. I felt inspiredd and energized after walking the most scenic places on earth.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

The group leader was dynamic, very experience . He used his judgement in keeping us safe and at the same time ensuring that we enjoyed our vacation. Lovely guy and personality. He also has a wealth of knowledge of the islands.

What did you think of your group leader?

My advice is to follow the trip notes and walk with all of the items listed. I will also suggest wearing long pants for the mountain walks as some places the bushes are overgrown.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

A very satisfied customer and will difinetly do crete in the near future.

    WALKING ON THE GREEK ISLANDS

After the cold UK weather an ideal break at this time of year, warm and mostly sunny, a mix of pleasant walks, fine food, a touch of sightseeing and not too crowded this early in the season.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

The stunning walk from Fira to Oia on Santorini, dazzling ever changing views of the caldera, finishing with the while marble streets of Oia.

What did you think of your group leader?

Well organised, knowledgeable, easy going, delightfull company.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Certainly this year in early April a light jacket for the evenings was useful.

    WALKING ON THE GREEK ISLANDS

A well organised trip with an outstanding guide and very nice fellow walkers. The walks were just right for our age and fitness.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

The walk down the Byzantine way on Paros was spectacular. We, also, both felt a tremendous achievement in completing the 13kms. walk on Santorini.

What did you think of your group leader?

He was outstanding and lead us with humour and understanding. His knowledge about everywhere we visited was very good. He also was able to pass on lots of information about the long term history of where we visited. He knew some great restaurants and drinking "holes"

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

It was impotant to us that we selected the correct grade of walking to suite our age (over 70). It worked out very well and we did not feel that we were holding the walking party up!

Is there anything else you would like to add?

Although the hotels were fairly basic they suited our needs (and budget). We really appreciated the hotel with the swimming pool!

    WALKING ON THE GREEK ISLANDS

We have done several Exodus walking holidays and this one was disappointing in terms of the nature of the walking - three gentle strolls - and value for money - all the hotels were very basic.  We spent the following week on two other islands doing self guided walks and staying in far better accommodation for nearly half the price.  So in our opinion, this trip is only worth doing if you want to be in a group and/or want your travel arranged by a guide.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

Paros is relatively unspoilt. Santorini was overrun by tourists but its beauty cannot be denied.

What did you think of your group leader?

The group leader was helpful and pleasant.

    WALKING ON THE GREEK ISLANDS

A very enjoyable week; a welcome mix of walking and relaxation, glorious weather, delicious food, good company and three idyllic islands each with their own distinct character.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

Hard to choose since each island was so different and beautiful in its own way. Prettiest villages - Paros; Most enjoyable and varied walk - Naxos. Sharpest intake of breath and "WOW" moment - the first view of Santorini's incredible caldera.

What did you think of your group leader?

Thanos was brilliant. I'd agree with other reviewers who've commented on how hardworking and helpful he is. Obviously incredibly experienced and knowledgeable, but he also goes out of his way to assure the health and wellbeing of his clients (and will also rescue the occasional goat that has got its leg stuck in a wall!)

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Take a wheeled bag/suitcase; there is an approx. 10 minute walk from the hotel to the metro in Athens, then you also have to move your luggage on and off the ferries. I didn't take one, and soon regretted it. If you go in the hot summer months, take a good hat, especially for Santorini where there is very little shade on the walk.  The walks are relatively easy but a head for heights will come in handy on Santorini. There was one part of the walk that I struggled with because it was loose, slippery pumice with a sheer drop just a few feet away (but there is an "easier" route that you can choose to take if you are afraid of heights).   Be prepared for small changes in itinerary and lots of time on ferries. Relax and go with the flow!

Is there anything else you would like to add?

The only bit I really didn't enjoy was the very rushed evening on arrival in Naxos and that overall we had a lot less time there than the first two islands. However I do accept that this was in part unavoidable because of the ferry timings.  Apart from that, this holiday was the perfect chill-out week, just what I needed at the time!

    WALKING ON THE GREEK ISLANDS

Wonderful hoilday, great group and the right balance between sightseeing, walking and time for ourselves.  Note, however, that you do not see Athens on this trip - you need to add this on yourself at the beginning or end of the holiday.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

I loved Naxos and plan to go back.  The old town was wonderful.

What did you think of your group leader?

Cecile was lovely and reminded you always that nothing was compulsory except getting to the boat on time!  So you didn't feel that you had to join in the group excursions that she arranged, although I did and really enjoyed them.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Don't expect much from the Santorini sunset trip - masses of people,  - but you can get as good (if not better) a sunset in Naxos or Paros, or from a different vantage point in Santorini.  Also, Santorini is geared up for the cruise ships, so the prices are  much more expensive than in Naxos or Paro.
