Walking in Evia

We had a wonderful week. Our group was delightful, the hotel had a lovely local charm and the town of Karystos has a lovely friendly atmosphere. The walks were quite exhausting because of the heat, but as a result there's a huge feeling of satisfaction at the end of each day.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

Wonderful moments in shady spots alongside the waterways, after hiking up the hot hillsides. Seeing the beautiful oleanders growing wild, so much colour in the landscape. The friendliness of the locals. Roman columns left half-carved in the marble quarry, exposed for 2,000 years.

What did you think of your group leader?

Cecile is delightful and very very energetic.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Is there anything else you would like to add?

Evia - a true gem on the second largest Greek island (who knew?)

Just an hour away from the port of Rafina is the unspoilt island of Evia. A really lovely destination for walkers and Greek island hoppers alike.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

The final day's walk is long but a nice end to the trip. Meeting some of the proud Evia residents was inspirational, very versatile and industrious people from the hotelier who has a farm and makes the cheese at breakfast, to the fisherman who not only fishes but rescues animals, and the lady who hosts jazz and music festivals at the local historic vineyard estate.

What did you think of your group leader?

Cecile was great, calm and collected, just the right balance.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

It is rough enough terrain with a lot of undergrowth on the hills, so bring long trousers and some antiseptic creams. Walking poles aren't mandatory but I would recommend them.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

Go, you will be surprised how lovely it all is.

    Enjoyable holiday in Evia

This was my first holiday with Exodus and I was very impressed by the standard of the holiday. Karystos is a very pleasant resort, with some good restaurants, but is not over-commercialised. The hotel is good, though hot water did go missing for a short time! I had a room with balcony facing the sea front. There were tea/coffee-making facilities in the room and after a hard day's walking it was nice to sit on the balcony with a cup of coffee and watch the world go by. The walks were good with many fine views of both mountains and sea. The six members of the group got on well and we had enjoyable evenings sat outside restaurants drinking cheap local wine and chatting. I would certainly travel with Exodus again.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

I think that the second walk of the holiday, when we went up to a 'saddle' between two peaks was the highlight of the walking programme. There was a great sense of peace and tranquillity up there.

What did you think of your group leader?

Our guide was excellent, with very good local knowledge. The travel arrangements all worked well and she found us some excellent restaurants for our evening meals. Problems (such as the above-mentioned hot-water shortage) were quickly dealt with.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Make sure you have some long trousers, because the shrubby vegetation on the upland walks can be very prickly!

Is there anything else you would like to add?

I would have liked the walks to be just a little bit longer. However, I'm new to Exodus and unused to their grading system. Perhaps I will have a better idea of what walks to expect on my next Exodus holiday.

Great, relaxed trip with cultural, bird and flower interest. Food, people, setting all good.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

Tha dragon house at the highest point of the island.

What did you think of your group leader?

    Perfect for the trip.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Is there anything else you would like to add?

Tipping remains a little awkward. Recommending £35 each creates a very large tip from a biggish group who we assume is getting a decent wage from you. Leaders will read this and may feel they were not good enough if they do not receive the full amount.

An excellent holiday with lovely varied walks taking in ancient sites and many wonderful sights. The wildflowers in mid April were just superb. Bountiful food in a variety of restaurants, vg hotel, vg guide with superb local knowledge which really added to my experience of this wonderful island.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

The wildflowers - particularly the Violas on Mt Ochi - but everywhere. Plus the pumpkin filo pie. Plus being on top of Mt Ochi, plus the Roman columns. So many great experiences.

What did you think of your group leader?

Thanos was great - hugely inspirational and knowledgeable and hugely proud of his country - and rightly so. Plus the morning pastries which he always provided - well, that is a first for me on any trip! You have got to taste the pumpkin/raisin/cinnamon/homemade filo pastry pie.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

    Just go there, it's fab.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

No, but it's an apparently undiscovered Greek island, so therefore go before it is discovered.

    A Marvellous Week

All the travel arrangements worked to perfection throughout; the walks in beautiful scenery and near-perfect weather were excellent; the guide was friendly, knowledgeable and efficient; and the food plentiful and wholesome.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

There were many, but clambering around the Ancient Gate above Styra, the Dragon House on Mount Ochi, and stumbling upon monumental abandoned columns strewn on a hillside were probably the highlights.

What did you think of your group leader?

Cecile could not have been more friendly, helpful and well organised. We enjoyed her company and her guiding immensely.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

    Don't expect to lose weight.

Really enjoyable stay in an attractive and interesting part of Greece

Staying in an excellent family run hotel in a small fishing port, unspoiled by mass tourism, this is a trip that gives the opportunity to walk in some spectacular historic landscapes on paths and routes that are rarely challenging but which may prove tricky to people who have never walked recreationally before. You are introduced to local history, food and drink by a passionate and knowledgeable local guide, experiencing a range of walking, landscapes and local food that would be hard to organise for yourself.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

Too many highlights to mention; a great break all round.

What did you think of your group leader?

The local group leader is very proud of his island and his country and will defend them passionately. Having been born in the area he seems to know every other person in the place and clearly his good local connections have opened up possibilities that may not have been there for us without his influence.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

If you are an experienced walker looking for a week of challenging walks you may be disappointed but if you are happy to be lead to a range of attractive historic spots in a fairly leisurely way, this is for you.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

The Galaxy Hotel is an excellent base for the week, with great views over the sea and the harbour of the active fishing port of Karystos. The great range of tavernas, where evening meals are taken, are all within just a few minutes walk of the hotel as is most of what the town has to offer--ideal. The rooms, which are perfectly adequate and comfortable, are kept really clean by the hard working staff and the buffet breakfast is fine without being spectacular. You won't go out hungry!

Brilliant way to spend Xmas! Fantastic holiday from start to finish

This was a great holiday with a superb guide and a very welcoming ambience at the hotel and all the tavernas we used for evening meals. Good picnics with a wide range of sweet and savoury items from the local bakers. The walking was also excellent - not too challenging but varied and very interesting. Thanos is an absolutely wonderful guide and it was a privilege to share his enthusiasm for his beautiful island

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

Seeing the cipollino marble columns on the final day! These were the columns used to create the temple at Palmyra and the remaining columns could be used to rebuild it if circumstances ever allow. It was also very humbling to witness the Christmas morning service, complete with Gregorian chants. The church was full to overflowing and we 'observers' joined the overspill congregation on the square outside. Even for a couple of agnostics, this was quite something!

What did you think of your group leader?

No superlative is adequate to decribe the wonderful Thanos! Knowledgeable and informative at all stages. he ensured that every member of the groups had everything they needed at all stages of the trip. He is clearly held in great affection by all the places we visited. He coped admirably with the logistic difficulty caused by the late arrival of the group flight and nobody felt at all inconvenienced. His lovely family joined us at the taverna for our Christmas Eve meal - a real family atmosphere all round.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Book it now! You won't regret it

Is there anything else you would like to add?

This was such a great holiday, we might break the habit of a lifetime and do it again ...

    Perfect Trip :)

1st trip with Exodus - won't be the last! Perfect arrangements from start to finish.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

I really enjoyed the the whole experience: great group of likeminded people, stunning scenery, excellent picnic lunches and delicious dinners in local tavernas, perfect hotel location in a great Greek holiday resort across the road from the beach. Whats not to like?

What did you think of your group leader?

Cecille was a great group leader. I loved her calm, laid back nature but felt reassured of her ability to lead a mixed ability group in v hot weather. The pace of the walks was perfect for the whole group.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

It was really hot when i travelled at the end of August but i wouldn't swap it. The reward of swimming in the sea at the beautiful coves at the end of 2 of the treks makes it so worthwhile.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

Book this holiday if you like beautiful coastal and mountain scenery, great food and a chance for some R & R on the beach at the end of the day. Oh and ask Cecille for her recommendation for an amazing cocktail bar in Karystos ;)

    Mountain & Villages of Evia

This was my 1st trip with Exodus. I was very impressed with the various landscapes I encountered on the day hikes throughout the week.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

Walking along the gorge and ending the hike on one of the nicest beaches I have ever seen.

What did you think of your group leader?

Cecile was excellent. She was able to maintain a nice pace for our group. Very well organized and very informative.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Bring a pair of long pants and a long sleeve shirt. We encountered numerous prickly bushes on the trails.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

We ate at a different taverna each night. Every meal, we had different appetizers for each dinner, which was a nice touch. Impressed with the variety. For breakfast, the Greek honey an yogurt was memorable. As for the group, there were 10 of us on the week long trip. A pleasure and joy to share this experience with them. Opa!!!

    Mountains and villages of Evia

Lovely scenery to be seen. It is a very peaceful location. The hotel is in the perfect location for both the beach and restaurants.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

Walking in the gorge. Stunning views and finishing the walk on a delightful beach.

What did you think of your group leader?

Cecilia is very well organized and catered for everyone's needs. She has a wealth of local knowledge and negotiated well with the local restaurants.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

    Relax and enjoy the island!

Is there anything else you would like to add?

Follow Cecillia's advice on what to wear when out walking such as long trousers to protect your legs for the scratchy plants!

    Evia

Well looked after and group was a good one. Eating in different tavernas was fun.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

For me it was seeing the old ruins especially the quarry and walking on Roman paths. The wonderful smell of thyme and herbs.

What did you think of your group leader?

She was lovely. Really cared for us. As one of the slowest I was not forgotten.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Don't expect 5 star resort treatment. All is clean, comfortable friendly with plenty of food. Really good value for money. View from the rooms at the front is good but you do have to put up with traffic/people noise so take ear plugs.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

I would have like a lot more greenery, salad stuff in with my sandwich.

Rich in culture, spectacle, history, flora... and food!

What a memorable holiday. Despite untypical cloud and rain, and the quiet of an out-of-season town, we enjoyed spectacular walks, punctuated by the most engaging mini lectures on Greek history, culture and mythology, from the Trojan War to the risk of a Grexit! We also found a friendly bar where we danced every night and enjoyed impromptu demonstrations of Greek and Albanian dances!

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

Discovering the marble pillars, quarried, carved and polished high up the mountain, and left as they lay when the army had to be withdrawn to defend Rome against the invaders.

What did you think of your group leader?

Thanos was outstanding: took the greatest care over our wellbeing and spoke with great passion, knowledge and love of the island.

    island of Evia

A week full of amazing moments, either walking in beautiful mountains, seeing sites that were inspirational, eating delicious local food, chatting with interesting people and looked after by a natural guide.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

seeing the massive Roman columns, half way through being quarried, just abandoned on a mountainside.

What did you think of your group leader?

I could not imagine a leader more suited to this profession. He seemed to hold each of us in his mind all week, making sure our needs were met and questions answered. He never wavered in his enthusiasm for sharing his knowledge of his countries rich history and culture. He was funny and respectful, and I loved the way he also looked after local businesses by carefully sharing out meals and taxis amongst them all.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

If you want a week of being looked after and at the same time experiencing a local Greek community and visiting amazing historical sites while walking in beautiful hills, then this is a trip worth considering.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

    I will be back!

    Evia Waters

The trip started with sunshine, and a first walk, then the weather turned to rain and snow, covering the beautiful mountains. Excellent guide, re-planning routes, taxis, lunch menus and venues to enable us to continue walking. Food and service was amazing and plentiful. Scenery lovely. Company excellent. BA troublesome but guide and Exodus made the troubles dissipate.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

Watching the leader walking in adverse conditions carrying plastic bags full of delicious elevensies. The group spirit, walking through heavy rain but all still keeping together with a smile.

What did you think of your group leader?

Excellent! Nothing too much trouble, wise, informative, able to adapt to unusual and trying events.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Keep the free airport newspaper as it helped to dry out wet boots. Waterproofs and trousers - just in case..... Have room in your waist bands before the trip.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

It would be great to do it again, same guide, same people but lovely sunshine every day.

    Mountains of Evia

Evia in the autumn was lovely- nice walking temperatures for beautiful sceneries! Our guide knew ( nearly) everyone on the island and spoilt us with local food, great walks and lovely stories about the areas. Very relaxing and a great way to prepare for a wet winter in Belfast. The win of the Northern Ireland football team against Greece was a great final! Brigitte

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

The walk along the valley which ended at a taverna where James Oliver filmed a cooking programme! A local dog followed us all the way and agreed ( did not want to jog back home- rather waited for a taxi)

What did you think of your group leader?

Thanos was lovely. He knew everyone on Evia and told great stories about Greek history, food and local trade vents

    Wonderful Wildflower Walking on Evia

Easy walking on hills and mountain gorges. The weather was nearly perfect, warm spring sunshine. Food was wonderful. The perfect antidote to a wet miserable British winter.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

The wild flowers carpet the hillside. Not only did they look amazing the scent was the best aroma therapy.

What did you think of your group leader?

Thanos was excellent. Knowledgeable and accommodating. Nothing was too much trouble for him. Dedicated to the group and intent on giving us the best experience possible.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Don't expect to be stretched. Walks were leisurely but delightful. Hotel was comfortable but not luxurious.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

This holiday exceeded my expectations in mountain scenery, nature, we even saw wild tortoise, and food!

    MOUNTAINS & VILLAGES OF EVIA

Exodus has once again provided a truly memorable walking holiday. Evia is beautiful and unspoiled and the holiday was everything we expected.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

Arriving at the peak of Mount Ohi in cloud and seeing the 'Dragon House' through the mist. Standing inside this 3000 year old Megalithic temple and listening to Thanos was an experience to remember. There were other inspirational moments but this was the highlight for us.

What did you think of your group leader?

Thanos was excellent. His expert knowledge of the terrain and of Ancient Greek and Evian History made every walk special. His organisational skills were first class; everything worked perfectly and nothing was too much trouble.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Do read the Trip Notes, the level of walking ability seems accurate; Moderate, needing an average level of fitness.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

Thanos, understandably, had to cater for all in large mixed ability group (18). However one person was unable to keep up even on the easiest of walks and slowed progress considerably on the harder walks, resulting in long, cold, waiting periods for others in the group. The brochure appears to describe accurately the walks as Moderate. So the person in question had either not read the Trip Notes, or had a mistaken belief in her own abilities. However, Thanos worked hard to ensure everyone had an enjoyable experience and added an extra walk on his day off to make up for our disappointment in missing Mount Kliossi, mentioned in the Trip Notes. We think two leaders would be better for a large group. Also the brochure might more directly question fitness levels by asking, for example; 'Are you able to walk, say 12 miles, in hilly country such as in the Lake District?' The Galaxy Hotel ws excellent in every respect and taverna food very good, as were the luncheon rolls provide by Thanos from the local bakery. This was a great holiday and we would happily recommend it.
