Abruzzo Winter Walk & Snowshoe

A wonderful holiday amid magnificent mountain scenery and historic villages, led by Lorrenzo, a guide with great local historical knowledge.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

Snowshoeing high into the wilderness of the snow covered peaks.

What did you think of your group leader?

A very caring person who aimed to make the holiday as enjoyable as he could for each person in the group. Great historical knowledge and a desire to explain this history to the group.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Be prepared for cold and wind on the high summits if the weather changes.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

An opportunity to explore a little known area of great beauty in Italy, both for its snow capped mountains and its ancient villages.

    Abruzzo Winter Walk and Snowshoe

An excellent trip in a rural part of Italy with beautiful views, fabulous food and friendly people. The walks and snowshoeing were sufficiently challenging, with a variety of terrain and things to see. On our trip, we had more walking than snowshoeing, due to the warmest winter in living memory, but that didn't spoil the trip. It is also a chance to stay in an old Italian town, steeped in history, but a victim of rural decline.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

A beautiful sunset and delicious dinner at Rocco Calascio, seeing a wolf at Campo Imperatore, and finally getting to the top of a red ski run in snowshoes. Seeing the beautiful Majella mountain when the cloud cleared.

What did you think of your group leader?

Lorenzo and Roberta were great company all week, and they worked extremely hard. Because of the lack of snow, they were constantly reviewing the plans, and trying to ensure that we got the most out of our holiday. Lorenzo is a great ambassador for Gran Sassio and Abruzzo, and he wanted to ensure that we got to see as much as possible. I thought that they looked after our enjoyment and safety at all times.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

There is no shop in Calascio where you stay for the first few days, so bring what you will need-snacks etc. I brought the wrong adaptor- northern european 2 pins won't work. Try all the food, especially in Calascio, but pace yourself for 4 courses. Avoid the gentian liquer unless you like drinks that taste like plant root.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

This is a busy trip, with lots to do and see, in a gorgeous part of Italy. Highly recommended.

    Abruzzo Winter Walk & Snowshoe.

This was a great trip to a fascinating region. The snowshoeing and walking was quite hard but rewarding, with splendid views. The accommodation was basic but good. The food was exceptional. The guides were the best we have experienced over many group trips. There was little snow but the guides did their best to find snow and provide excellent alternative walks. We are told that this was the first time in 20 years that they had had so little snow.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

The first day walking in the beech forest and high plateau

What did you think of your group leader?

Lorenzo is a fantastic guide and assisted by Roberta. They worked so hard to make the trip enjoyable for everyone.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

    Take lots of layers

    Abruzzo Snowshoeing

    Wonderful variety of scenery.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

The views from the top of the climb on the transfer day in Sirente-Velino Regional park. Absolutely stunning. Running down the side of a mountain in deep powder snow is fantastic fun.

What did you think of your group leader?

Lorenzo was an excellent leader, full of local knowledge and with a passion for where he lives. He was very attentive to the needs of the group and we felt very safe. Roberta was also an excellent guide.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Take a flask - the B&B and hotel will both fill this for you and you'll be out all day as there are no huts along the way for lunch. As ever with snowshoeing, layers are the key - you can get pretty warm, particularly on the climbs, and the weather was quite warm some days. There's a nice spa pool and sauna at the hotel.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

This was an excellent trip. There is an interesting contrast in scenery between the wide open spaces of the Gran Sasso for the first few days then the steep, wooded mountains of the Majella for the last couple. You shouldn't go hungry - the food, particularly at the local restaurant used for the first 4 nights, was excellent and plentiful.

    Abruzzo snow shoeing

A fabulous holiday. Wonderful scenery. A great group and tour leaders.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

Seeing a wolf was pretty special, and on the last day an eagle, but I think the 'ice forest' with every tree covered in flags of ice, glittering in the sun was probably the high point in terms of seeing things. Throughout the week the group was great fun too, which made the whole thing special.

What did you think of your group leader?

Lorenzo was great. He had a real passion for the area and his enthusiasm was catching. He couldn't have been more helpful and really wanted us all to have a good time. Roberta was great too.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Remember - snow shoeing can give you blisters in shoes that previously haven't caused a problem, so need to take extra care.
