Route 5 daagse rondreis Mt Etna Snowshoeing Long Weekend
Mt Etna is one of the highest volcanoes in Europe and one of the world’s most active. It rises to 3,350m above sea level, but this height varies as a result of on-going constructive and destructive explosive activity that constantly reshapes the summit crater area. Despite being located in the mild Mediterranean island of Sicily, Mt Etna receives deep winter snows down to 1,800m (and sometimes below). Clipping into our snowshoes, we walk through snow-covered and black lava flows along the Southern side of ‘Pista Altomontana’, a circular path around Mt Etna, staying overnight in a comfortable mountain refuge. We then make our way up to the Bove Valley, offering inspirational views of Sicily’s coastline and of the four craters that make up the top of this impressive volcano. This long weekend also includes two nights in the beautiful city of Catania, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its impressive lava-built Baroque buildings and an afternoon in the charming town of Taormina, famous for its twisting mediaeval streets and a second-century Greek theatre that add to its romantic air..
