Trek along the Vie del Sale to Pian del Re.

Today will leave our main luggage behind in Pian Melze and for the next 5 days we will be carrying everything that we need in our daysacks. We start our walk in the morning from Pian Melze directly to Pian del Re along the Grande Traversée des Alpes track (also known as the Vie del Sale). From here we will take a mule track into a steep gulley. The end of the walk involves a little bit of scrambling over a series of step stones but we will then be rewarded by the terrific scenery from the Giacoletti Hut, our accommodation for the night. A number of high peaks are visible from here such as the Punta Venezia (3095m). Ascent: 1080 m Descent:100 m Distance: 7 km *Rifugio Giacoletti or similar*

Climb to Col Gallarino and San Chiaffredo Pass; down to the Vallenta Valley.

We begin by following a track that leads to the ‘Grande di Visi’ lake and then after a good climb we will reach the top of Col Gallarino (2727m) and then the San Chiaffredo pass (2760m). After taking in the stunning views we walk down to the Vallenta valley, passing the Lungo and Bertin lakes. Unusually for a walk in this area, Mont Viso will actually be hidden from view. Instead we will have the majestic peaks of mountains such as Barracco, Piemonte, Michelis and Trento to enjoy. In the Vallenta valley the terrain will change to grass and pasture land and then to a beautiful Larch tree forest. The final part of today’s walk will involve an ascent before we reach our accommodation for the evening. Ascent: 850m Descent: 1025 Distance: 10 km *Rifugio Vallanta or similar*
