    CROSS-COUNTRY SKIING: ESPEDALEN

A fantastic week in a beautiful area, good company, great skiing & very well looked after by stefan & surina. The food both thai & non thai was very good.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

Difficult to single out one thing from a week of highlights but the quality of the skiing & the lack of crowds (we saw one other skier in the first four days) gave a feeling of adventure & having the area to ourselves.

What did you think of your group leader?

My first trip with albert & he was very good, great local knowledge he spent the previous week putting together a great program for the weeks skiing & also the free day. He was also good company & helped to make it a great week.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Layers good gloves & hat we had -25 one day. Go to hell & back on the free day, the potholes localy known as hell are well worth a visit, also try the hot chocolate.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

Highly recommended. If you want great skiing in stunning scenery, lovely food & great hosts this is a great choice.

    CROSS-COUNTRY SKIING: ESPEDALEN

A wonderful trip into the wilderness of central Norway. A homely mountain lodge with extremely hospitable owners.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

I really enjoyed the descent on the final day from the Dalsetter hotel to Espedalen Fjellstue. 4km of steep hills, sweeping bends and the sun shining through the trees.

What did you think of your group leader?

Albert was a great leader. A really friendly man with a vast knowledge of cross country skiing in Norway. Nothing is every too much and even on the free day he was happy to lead the snow shoeing trek.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Make sure you take plenty of layers for the colder months, January and February.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

The food prepared by Surina was absolutely excellent. We chose to have Thai food most nights and it was superb. A large mix of different dishes appeard every night. Lots of food to re-fuel after a hard day's skiing.

    CROSS-COUNTRY SKIING: ESPEDALEN

Comfortable hotel, great (mainly, by choice, Thai) food, wonderful hosts and loads of snow made for a great inaugural week of skiing here. Quiet location with skiing either from the hotel or no more than a short mini-bus drive away. Our hosts, Surina and Stefan, looked after us exceptionally well.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

Although it was cold we had a good few days up on the mountains with blue skies (and diamond dust) and great views; we pretty much had the mountains to ourselves. We had an interesting (non skiing) morning where we went to Hell and found it frozen over.

What did you think of your group leader?

My first trip with Albert - hugley experienced, professional and patient. This being a new trip he had spent the previous week researching the area with Stefan from the hotel to put together a good programme for us.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

As a the trip notes state, this is quiet location - there was about one car an hour on the road outside the hotel.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

Unique operatunity to enjoy Thai food (other options are available) AND skiing.

    CROSS-COUNTRY SKIING: ESPEDALEN

Outstanding skiing in a wonderful Winter wilderness . . . with very enjoyable local sightseeing and snow-shoe option on free day.  Exceptional cuisine and hospitality from Surina and Stefan.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

The sheer silence of the area is deafening!

What did you think of your group leader?

    First class . . . as usual!

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Lodge accommodation is comfortable but 'no frills' and rooms are not serviced. But there's always plenty of hot water!

Is there anything else you would like to add?

    Thoroughly recommended!

    Cross country skiing Espedalen

A brilliant holiday in a remote valley, outstanding accommodation and food, and wonderful ski trails.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

There were two. Skiing under a clear blue sky with the mountains covered in a thick blanket of snow that looked like icing on a cake. Wonderful long runs leading to lovely valleys. On return to the hotel we had superb Thai food prepared by Surina and her sister in law.

What did you think of your group leader?

A Good group leader who chose some great routes to suit the conditions and provided quizzes and good fun in the evenings. On the free day a visit to an icy gorge was arranged providing an alternative to skiing.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

This a great location for cross country skiing and you will benefit, as with any skiing, from spending a little time ensuring you are fit.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

We have been to the hotel three times and plan to return again. There is really good skiing and the welcome in the hotel is so warm and welcoming.

    Ski thrills and culinary delights

Espedalen is an attractive location far from any urban sprawl. It overlooks a lake and is closeted on both sides by snow covered mountains. The Strand Hotel is well managed in a welcoming manner. Nothing was too much trouble for our hosts Stephane and Surina. Facilities include sauna and hot tub to ease those inevitable twinges after a day on skis. Ski equipment is modern and well maintained. The area has a good selection of well maintained loipe and many opportunities to explore the area on snowshoes.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

Skiing on the plateau above Dalseter on well maintained tracks under powder blue sky.

What did you think of your group leader?

Albert Calleweort was an excellent leader. He was well informed about the local area and led our group in a confident, patient manner. Tuition and tips to improve an individual's skiing ability were delivered regularly with good humour. The evenings in the hotel involved a concise briefing about the next day's activities followed by a quiz or other social activity.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Exodus had covered all aspects of the trip comprehensively.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

The food at the Strand Hotel, Espedalen is exceptional. The breakfast buffet was well stocked with a range of food which also provided a satisfying packed lunch each day. The evening meal consisted of 8 - 9 Thai dishes beautifully prepared and presented. One member of our party was a vegetarian and he was provided with two mouthwatering dishes at each meal.

    Great skiing and wonderful food

We had a very enjoyable week of skiing - good snow most of the time and impressive scenery. We were extremely well fed at The Strand - Surina and Stefan made us all feel very welcome. They were attentive at all times despite having a one-week old baby! I am a vegetarian and was well catered for with a selection of dishes each night.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

Skiing over the high pastures with sunshine and blue skies.

What did you think of your group leader?

Albert is a sociable and conscientious leader. He thought carefully about the itinerary each day, matching it well to the conditions. He effectively managed the group of varying abilities/speeds, exercising just the right amount of discretion in terms of how much to keep the group together. Albert's passion for wildlife was evident and we benefited from his knowledge in this area.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

You will enjoy the trip more if you get fit before you go; there are some long days and lengthy uphill sections at times. The transfer from the airport is over three hours so be prepared for this. The temperature varied more than we expected so plan your clothing accordingly.

    Cross Country Skiing - Espedalen

A wonderful location for anyone with some skiing skills, great hosts (Sefan and Surina) at the Strand, wonderful food, and an excellent leader.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

Skiing on frozen lakes. Getting into real wilderness not far from the hotel. People enjoying themselves!

What did you think of your group leader?

Albert is a knowledgeable, experienced leader who takes care to plan interesting days, and can vary the plan to take account of opportunities that arise.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Don't be afraid to start with ski boots larger than your normal size - use thick socks to fill them. It's more comfortable than boots that are too tight.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

Don't forget a swimming costume for the hot tub.

This has to be the very best place to learn to cross-country ski.

There is a lake right in front of the hotel for finding your feet on skis, gentle slopes right beside it to start learning to snow-plough, all manner of terrain onto which to progress and some lovely circuits only a short minibus drive away. Perfect! Staying at The Strand is like being (exceptionally well-fed) guests in someone’s home. If you like your winter holidays to be active, in beautiful, remote, peaceful settings, without having to rough it at all, this is the place for you.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

I'm choosing three. Our last day of skiing, thoroughly enjoying a long, difficult descent, without falling, and feeling in total control. Such a sense of achievement as that hill would have terrified me earlier. Snowshoeing up on the plateau on our last day (high wind and melting snow made skiing impossible). It was so beautiful, vast, dazzling, white expanses, sunshine, wide views and terrific winds. Utterly exhilarating, and none of us regretted losing a day of skiing as Albert had arranged such a great alternative, and different, last day. Being down in Hell on our free day. It is dramatically more beautiful (and chillier) than you might imagine!

What did you think of your group leader?

Albert was a brilliant leader. Our group bonded particularly well and Albert managed to combine being absolutely part of the group and being completely in charge. We believed him if he told us we were capable of something, but he never pushed us so far that we were put off. As a result, the group all made astonishing progress. We thoroughly enjoyed the trip to Hellvete, quizzes and a talk from a local wildlife enthusiast that were arranged for us. It is a huge plus having an experienced leader who knows the area well because he was able to come up with a range of activities and to change plans according to the weather and our abilities. We’d love to have him leading us again.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Take a swimming costume and flip flops for the sauna and hot-tub. Some of our group had not thought to bring them and traditional sauna-wear (nothing!) is not allowed. The sauna really helped after a day of unaccustomed exercise. Don’t worry if chilli is not your thing. I was concerned that the food would all be too spicy for me, but Surina makes sure that there are always ‘zero’ options. If chilli IS your thing, she will happily punish your tastebuds with ‘number five’ options! Make sure Surina makes black bean eyeballs for tea! They are absolutely the most delicious things ever. I ate far too many and did not regret it at all!

Is there anything else you would like to add?

Surina and Stefan are amazing. They learned all our names and nothing seemed to be too much trouble. Our group had various dietary restrictions (at least seven between us!), but Surina made a real effort to make sure everyone was catered for and checked that no-one was eating anything they should not. She produced vast quantities of varied (mainly Thai) dishes, we came back to different afternoon teas every day and we had cooked lunches on some days as well. Stefan ferried us around, took us on our trip to Hellvete and sorted problems at all hours of the day and night. All this with three young children, including a brand-new baby. I honestly do not know how they do it. We can’t wait to go back!

Espedalen Cross Country Skiing 1st to 8 8th March 2015

The first two days of the trip had the best skiing I have ever enjoyed anywhere. This was helped by the metal edges on the cross country hire skis I was given. My rooms were spacious and comfortable and had controllable heating unlike so many places I have stayed with Waymark and Exodus in the past. The large bathroom had underfloor heating which was excellent for drying clothes. The cold water supply was from a mountain stream, so the tap water tasted better than all water form the tap at my home and better than most bottled water. The Thai food cooked by our hostess Surina was outstanding, better than most Thai restaurants. She and her assistant also did very well to cater for the diverse requirements of her guests some of whom required gluten free, some no fish, and some were vegetarians. Stefan was an exceptional host, helping to cut tracks for skiing, and on Wednesday 4th driving an hour to Lillehammer and back on the same day twice, to visit the hospital with injured skiers. The second time he waited with me while I was being treated, helping to keep my morale up by listening to my rambling conversation, while I was under the influence of first shock, and then hospital administered morphine.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

The second day's skiing was the best I have had. (I also liked the conversation I had with a professor from Oslo university on the plane about European literature, but that was an unexpected bonus, and nothing to do with Exodus).

What did you think of your group leader?

Albert was a very patient, and flexible leader, with an ability to observe those in his charge. Using this he was able to tailor the itinerary to their needs of those in his charge and to coach them successfully to improve their technique.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Although cross-country skiing is much safer than downhill, accidents can and do occur. Think of the potential disruption of your life which could be caused by injury.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

I fell and dislocated my shoulder on Wednesday 4 March. It was 8 hours before the shoulder could be put back at Lillehammer hospital. Because I was unable to participate in activities from Wednesday on, and because I had to wait so long for treatment, and have been in discomfort ever since, and cannot drive, swim, run or play tennis at the moment, I can only give the holiday 4 stars.

Beginner cross country week in Espadalen

We have had a great week of learning to ski with Albert. He was very patient and was always happy to meet our various problems. Great instructor who never panicked. Fantastic accomodation(basic but relaxed and homely). Stefan was always ready to help with all our needs. Surena produced such amazing Thai and European food despite having a three week old baby. Both always cheerful.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

Great place, loads of snow and dog weather.

What did you think of your group leader?

Best leader ever. Learnt to snowplough at last. So patient.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Great place to learn to ski. Definitely recommend this holiday.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

    Looking to ski next year!

    Unbeatable experience and value!

This was mine and my husband's first cross country skiing trip and we are so pleased we booked the beginners course. We consider ourselves fit individuals and did consider the intermediate course which is listed as suitable for 'fit beginners'. Several other very fit individuals on our trip also considered this option, but if you are a total novice to cross country skiing do not be tempted! It is much harder technically than you can imagine, but Albert our instructor was outstanding in gently encouraging and teaching us the basics so we could all achieve an excellent holiday experience. His skill is superb and because we were beginners he was able to give us the time to develop; but, if as one of our group was, you are skilled then Albert managed to find routes suitable for this skill level to practice on your own and which did not compromise the novice bulk of the group! In addition to the excellent leadership from Albert the hotel is also outstanding! Serena and Stefan make you feel like you are staying in their own home rather than a hostel and the food is exceptional. So by Norwegian standards of food quality and cost this holiday is value for money by the meals alone. Serena really goes out her way to cater for individual food requirements such as being a vegetarian (which I am) or having very specific food allergies - no one felt their meals were different or uninspiring because they were of the same excellent standard as the main catered food. If you are thinking about this holiday don't - just book it!

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

Mastering a 'snow plough' and 'herringboning up hill', both very challenging in the first 3 days.

What did you think of your group leader?

Superb! Albert has such a skill in managing a group of 14 with varying skill levels and experiencing different technical difficulties while learning, but he has such patience and gently encourages you to keep trying.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

If you are a complete cross country skiing beginner then do not be tempted to book an intermediate, even if you are super fit, because technically it is very challenging. Book the beginner and if you find you master the skills easily then Albert will find ways to challenge you but without compromising the main beginner group.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

Serene and Stefan who manage the hostel make this trip, and even if you were very unlucky with the snow you would still have an amazing experience. However, there is no where to visit or go to from the hostel so if you want some lively entertainment you will be disappointed - excellent food or not. All 14 in our group wanted a quiet and peaceful time which meant we were able to totally enjoy the holiday - but we were all going off to bed by 21.30!

    CROSS-COUNTRY SKIING: ESPEDALEN

A great week learning how to cross country ski with a competent and relaxed leader and a very comfortable hotel with excellent food and welcoming hosts.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

Being on our own on the tracks out in the wilderness with snow as far as the eye could see. The whole area is so big and quiet that you rarely see anyone else out skiing especially during the week, and yet the tracks are cut regularly and are in very good condition.  Also the feeling of accomplishment once you finally grasp the techniques is great.

What did you think of your group leader?

An excellent instructor, Albert was very patient and skilled at teaching us and coped well with the different levels in the group. He gave freedom to the members who picked up the techniques quicker than the rest to go on ahead and looked after those of us who took a bit longer. He had a good knowledge of the area and gave us the confidence to take on longer routes each day whilst arranging pickups for people who wanted to finish earlier.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Get fit before you go. It is hard work and you will enjoy it more. Take lots of layers that are easy to put on and off. Once you start going uphill you get hot, as soon as you stop you cool down fast and need to put on more clothes quickly. The hotel rooms don't have tea and coffee facilities but Surina and Stefan are quite happy to fill flasks etc.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

We really enjoyed this holiday and it is a great way to learn how to cross country ski. It is easy to go out on your own skiing from the hotel on the free day as all the trails are signposted. The hotel was warm and comfortable, and Surina makes wonderful food whether you choose Thai or Norwegian cuisine. We will definitely be back!

    Holiday with a difference

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

The food by Surina was amazing & walking the lake at dawn is something not to be missed. If you want a romantic location in an outdoor setting this is it!

What did you think of your group leader?

Albert as per usual is a gentle genial guide. He is one of Exodus's best. This is my second trip with Albert.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

If this is your first time skiing think before doing this holiday. I ended up snowshoeing for the week. You need to get your balance on Skiis fast or else you will not be able to keep up with the group. If that happens you will end up snowshoeing by yourself or thinking about heading home. I bought a flight home & almost left the group, this not a cheap option. This location is not in a village location & has limited other opportunities. If you can skii or ice or roller skate great. If not get lessons before you leave. It will greatly enhance your holiday. Bring a weatherproof camera with spare battery. The views will blow you away.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

If you do end up up snowshoeing then two things are worth doing. Climbing Ruten is amazing & the ridge opposite the the hotel across the lake has not only fantastic views but a great descent. The Stout which is really a dark ale is not only great for settling your tummy but has a wonderful character as well (I am Irish & visit Germany regularly!). The hotel is so cosy you could walk around in your stockings & Surina's little girls make it home fom home. If you need souvenirs on the last day, if you can ski fast or take the option Albert gives you the other hotel in the valley has a souvenir shop plus wonderful coffee. Never refuse the hot chocolates anywhere, they love cream & you will well have earned it. An English lady sometimes calls in & gives a slide show on local flora & fauna. It's really, really good. Helveta or hell is well worth the visit. Frozen potholes are interesting. The restaurant is closed so no sour porridge, sorry!
