    Slowakian winter wonderland

wonderful week in great company. I loved learning about Slowakia's history. Snow was not perfect for skiing but we did a couple of hikes in the snow, which were equally rewarding and strenuous. the massage available in the hotel was great too.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

The view from the mountain hut at Zelene Pleso and the gypsy band in the restaurant on our last night.

What did you think of your group leader?

Jan is a great guide, very helpful and interesting to talk to. He has an enormous knowledge of Slowakian history, which added a further dimension to the holiday.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

have a massage in the hotel

Is there anything else you would like to add?

a warm up session at the very start of the week would be helpful. I would probably advertise the holiday as a xcs/winterwalking holiday.

    High Tatras Cross Country skiing

A great new venue for Exodus in this interesting country. Even in early March there was plenty of snow and the local guides made sure we got to see different locations. Foreign tourists were very few and far between and the country is still getting to grips with some aspects of winter sports tourism. Apart from the main downhill ski centre, the tracks are not groomed to the standard that I have seen in Alpine and Nordic venues. Also, unlike in other places, it is customary to hike and exercise dogs on the tracks which adds to the patchy ski conditions. Therefore, some experience in coping with off-track and rough terrain is advisable here.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

The High Tatras are beautiful mountains and well worth a visit. The hotel is right adjacent to the main range. Additionally, costs of meals out and refreshments are extremely low making this a very attractive venue.

What did you think of your group leader?

Our local leader spoke excellent English and was very well informed about natural and social history. I learned a lot about European history during the week.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

If you are a Grade 2 skier and confident on rough terrain and off-track, this holiday is definitely worth a go. Be advised that there is a small local airport at Poprad that is a short train ride from the hotel. I believe there is a daily service from London Luton airport that is worth checking out. Otherwise, there is a 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 hour transfer from Krakow

Is there anything else you would like to add?

there is little flat countryside so that most skiing is up or down. Good snowplough technique is essential

    Skiing in Slovakia

Despite the weather trying to get the better of us and snow up to our armpits it was a great week. The hotel was comfortable and we essentially had it to ourselves. The Tatras were beautiful and it was great to finally see them in all their glory at the end of the week when the sun finally came out!

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

Skiing at sunset at the base of the Tatras.
