  • Internationale groepsreis Camino de Santiago Trek Follow Spain's most celebrated pilgrimage route
    • All breakfasts are included. Breakfasts in Spain usually consist of coffee with milk, toast with ham, olive oil, tomatoes, cheese and butter and jam. Bakery items such as pastries, fruit and juice are also popular. During this trip you can expect different variations of breakfast at the hotels and pensions we stay at but they will all include at least some of the standard breakfast items that are popular in Spain. The land in north Spain is rich and produces almost everything one might want to eat from fish and seafood to good quality meat, vegetables and fruit. Your leader will recommend good places to eat. Sometimes it will be tapas, sharing some “raciones” as a group and sometimes you will be able to choose from the menu. In the Camino de Santiago restaurants and bars offer a set menu called the “Menu del Pergrino” and offer 5 starters, 5 mains and dessert, coffee and drink for about EUR 10-15. If you feel daring you can try the Octopus “Pulpo a la Feira” that Spaniards consider a delicacy and is well cooked and served sliced with paprika, olive oil and sea salt. Sometimes it is also served with “grelos" (boiled sliced potatoes). Mealtimes in Spain are later than in many other countries; dinner is usually taken between 20:00hrs and 21.30hrs. Please be aware that meat and fish are staple food in Northern Spain.  Vegetarians can be catered for, as are other dietary requirements although there may not be the same choice or variety as you have at home and please be prepared to be flexible. Please advise us upon booking.

  • Internationale groepsreis Headwater - Classic Catalan Self-Guided Cycling Explore the Catalan countryside - a region of pine-fringed valleys dotted with historic castles, hilltop fortresses and ancient wine villages.
    • All breakfasts and 2 evening meals included Traditional Spanish food such as /paella/, /chorizo/ and /albondigas/ (meatballs) can be found on just about every menu in Catalunya, but don’t forget to try the regional specialities too. Local cuisine features plenty of fish, including world-renowned anchovies from L’Escala, and /botifarras/ (black pudding) from the mountains. A good starter might be /Pan Catal//á//n/ /(pa amb tom//à//quet),/ this is lightly toasted bread, drizzled with olive oil and topped with tomatoes and garlic. Thanks to its geography, the region has developed “Sea and Mountain” - /mar y muntana/ cuisine, combining chicken with lobster, or rabbit with prawns. Fruits are used as well, such as roasted chicken and figs, or pheasant and grapes.  Dishes are rich and hearty, however, it is not just a meat-based cuisine, there are plenty of vegetable options. Catalan dishes also rely heavily on sauces: /Sofrito/ is an onion and tomato sauce, /Picada/ is made from dried fruits, nuts and herbs, /Sanfaina/ is a sauce of fried peppers, aubergines, onions and tomatoes and /Romesco/ is made with tomatoes, peppers, nuts and garlic. Most menus are written in both Castilian and Catalan and sometimes in English too, but you may find a pocket dictionary useful in the more remote places.

  • Internationale groepsreis Headwater - Contrasts of Catalunya Self-Guided Cycling - Premium Ride through beautiful Spanish villages and rural orchards
    • All breakfasts and 4 evening meals inlcuded. Traditional Spanish food such as paella, chorizo and albondigas (meatballs) can be found on just about every menu in Catalunya, but there are plenty of tasty local specialities too. Local cuisine features plenty of fish, including world renowned anchovies from L'Escala, and botifarras (black pudding) from the mountains. A delicious starter is Pan Catalan, which is lightly toasted bread, drizzled with olive oil and topped with tomatoes and garlic. The geography of the area has developed regional cuisine mixing 'surf and turf'; combinations such as chicken and lobster, or rabbit with prawns. Fruits also feature strongly with dishes combining chicken with figs, or pheasant and grapes. Dishes tend to be rich and hearty but there are also plenty of vegetable options for vegetarians. Catalan foods also feature sauces in many dishes, which are usually rich in flavour. The region is also renowned for the production of Cava, around the town of San Sadurni de Noya. There is a herby, smoky, grassy flavour to some of these as a result of the grape varieties and climate. The region also produces some of Spain's best wines. Though we do not cycle through San Sadurni de Noya, try the wine from this region if you spot it on a menu.

  • Internationale groepsreis Headwater - Salzburg and the Austrian Lake District, Self-Guided Cycling This 7-night holiday gives a lovely introduction to the Austrian lakes district, Salzkammergut, a land intrinsically linked with 'The Sound of Music' and Mozart. This is picture-postcard Austria: shimmering blue lakes, deep green meadows, alpine villages and traditional dress.

Typically, you will be set up for the day by a breakfast of cold meats and cheeses, along with the traditional bread, jam and coffee. Austrians tend to eat heartily at lunchtime and less in the evenings; you will be well catered for at dinner. Local specialities include Wiener schnitzel (breaded veal cutlet) and various stews of beef and pork. Dumplings, potatoes or noodles are all regular accompaniments along with vegetables in a style similar to English cooking. Desserts are often fruit based - such as Apfelstrudel - or cream pastries. Rehrucken is a traditional chocolate and almond cream cake On average Austrians, drink twice as much coffee as beer. There are many different types to choose from, particularly in the larger towns and cities and are often drunk in specialist coffee houses, known locally as a Kaffeehaus. It is often served in large cups and finished off with a healthy dose of whipped cream. Austrian wines tend to be sweet white varieties, similar to German Mosel wines. The three best-known areas for producing white wines are Krems, Klosterneuburg and Gumpoldskirchen. The main red wine producing area is Voslau. Of course Austria is better known for its beer and you will find a wide variety of local brews. The best known are Gösser and Augustiner Brau and come in light or dark forms.
