THE ULTIMATE LYCIAN WAY

I chose this holiday for a bit of activity, warm weather and good scenery ... and that's exactly what I got.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

Mount Olympos days was probably the best - starting in the cool of the early morning, seeing the sunrise on the way up, experiencing the views and reaching the summit of Olympos for a nice cup of tea at the cable car station was great.

What did you think of your group leader?

Very good at first aid! Some of group incurred minor injuries and he treated them calmly and competently. His briefings for the next day weren't always the clearest, but not always knowing what to expect can be interesting.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

If you walk fast and prefer not to stop too often, you may be frustrated if the group has a wide range of walking speed & stamina, as our leader made us keep together by slowing down & stopping to allow others to catch up. I suppose this may be for health and safety reasons or not getting lost, but it was a bit frustrating at times.

    THE ULTIMATE LYCIAN WAY

it is worth remembering that this holiday can be fairly tough in view of the hot weather - around 28c even in early October. Fortunately there are a lot of pine forests which provide some shade from the sun.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

Reaching the summit of Mt. Olympos, seeing the Eternal Flame and being rewarded by wonderful views of the coast.

What did you think of your group leader?

He was good fun and walked at a sensible pace with plenty of stops for water. He was very relaxed.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Take a warm sleeping bag for the camping night + a headtorch and take shorts and light tops for the days.

    THE ULTIMATE LYCIAN WAY

I was anticipating a week of coastal walking with superb views over the sea. In fact, only the final day really meets these expectations. A large proportion of the walking is through pine forests with no real views at all. I've been on many Exodus trips and, although I did have an enjoyable week's holiday, this is the most disappointing trip I've done.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

The final day's walking to the Geldonia lighthouse is excellent. It's what most people in the group were expecting the whole trip to be like. The night around the campfire (I slept out under the stars) and the trek up mount Olympus were also very good.

What did you think of your group leader?

His daily briefings seemed to bear very little relation to what actually happened on the walks. With no explanation, the second day's walk was shortened to around 2h30m instead of the 5-6 hours promised in the itinerary. On the final day, at the end of a long walk, he gave us an extra hour's slog instead of a 10 minute walk from the lighthouse to where the coach was parked.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Be prepared for hot, humid walking, take plenty of water! Poles are a big help on the long descent from Mt. Olympus that is over quite loose terrain. I had a 4 season sleeping bag and was comfortable sleeping out at the camp site, but several others had a cold night in 2 or 3 season bags even in their tents.

    THE ULTIMATE LYCIAN WAY

Overall this was a great trip with fantastic scenery and walking in an interesting part of Turkey - the walking was rugged and sticks are really an essential bit of kit. On the free day 10 of us took a boat along the coast and this was one of the highlights of the week.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

Getting to the top of mount Olympus, sitting aorund the camp fire the night before, watching the sun come up over the ridge before setting off. Also reaching the view of the lighthouse on the final days walking as the views down to the coeast were stunning. And the Turkish bath at the end of the trip in Antalya followed by a lunch at a restaurant overlooking the harbour.

What did you think of your group leader?

Probably the worst leader I have had on my many exodus trips - he was innattentive and uncommunicative, shared no local or historical information and although was quite pleasant at times on a one-to-one basis showed no interest in us as a group. Trek briefings were so minimal that we had no idea of what was to come the next day. Fortunately it was a very good group so we were able to cope with this but had the group dynamics been difficult this would have been more problematic.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Take a water bladder as it was extremely hot - it was good to be able to drink easily on the go. I had wonderful food as a vegetarian. The food at the pension we stayed at in Cirali for 2 nights was fantastic. chocolate bars are provided as snacks but my cereal bars were also very welcome.

    THE ULTIMATE LYCIAN WAY

A perfect trip. The challenging hiking days amongst the amazing mountain scenery and the long mountain climb, mixed with a couple of nights to relax at the most stunning, almost deserted beach at Cirali to swim and get some energy back, and finally some time at the end in the city of Antalya to explore a bit of Turkey, gets the mix just about right.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

The climb to the top of mount Olympos has got to be the highlight, unbelievable views to the coast and across the other mountain ranges. The whole of the region has the most green and beautiful scenery, and the smells from the Cedars and Pines is amazing, drinking from the mountain springs, eating wild Mulberries off the trees, several river crossings in the valleys, and keeping an eye out for the many wild Tortoises on the hikes are great memories too.

What did you think of your group leader?

Group leader was great, very knowledgeable and went the extra mile many times to make sure all the group were well fed and had a great time, always putting our interests first and took us to some great places to see some Rural Turkey which I particularly enjoyed. Certainly did not believe in hanging about as far as pace is concerned but this did suit our group well. Made an unbelievable meal on the open fire at base camp (and managed to get a crate of Efes up there too !) then got up at 4 in the morning to do the same for breakfast before the climb. Top man Thanks Ozgur !

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Do make sure of your fitness for this one, none of the hiking on this trip is on flat ground, it is all climbing up or down very steeply and where there are paths they are very rocky under-foot. A very good pair of strong leather walking boots with good ankle support is a must, the other thing that I would not have done without was my 2 litre platypus, which meant not having to stop and fiddle about with rucksacks and bottles to get a drink whilst on the mountain climbs. A good warm fleece for the night camping at base camp as the temps can drop a bit at night and a good camera with video is also a must as the views are fantastic.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

My first Exodus trip and it will certainly not be my last, very impressed with all the organization from the booking right to the flight home. The whole group had a great time and the food, accommodation, hiking and locations were all extremely good. It is a holiday after all and I really enjoyed joining with like minded people to do some of the things I love.

    A Lycian adventure to remember

I am in now in love with Turkey. Beautiful scenery at every turn, great food, great company and really great beer sum it up nicely. This was an amazing trip with some pretty tough walking. I am pretty sure I have never sweat so much in my life.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

I loved every day but the feeling of making it up to the summit of Mt Olympos was very rewarding. It was hard slog and we had no views at the top due to the cloud cover but it was worth every drop of sweat expended. I rewarded myself with a brownie and icecream at the top and it tasted like the best thing I had ever eaten and was very well earned! Walking down to Cirali in the middle of a massive storm and seeing the Eternal Flame at the Chimaera burning was amazing as well.

What did you think of your group leader?

Ali was great to walk with. He was super organised and even managed to surprise the whole group by providing a last minute bus towards the end of a particularly hot day walking. He was attentive to the group and its needs and made sure we had enough rest breaks. He knows the trail so well that I felt totally confident following him where ever he took us. He is knowledgeable and happy to share this knowledge and answer any questions put to him about any topic - including wrestling!

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

You definitely need a reasonable level of fitness for this trip. Some of the terrain is very steep and it is very rocky underfoot. I was not expecting the temperature to be so high this late in the season and even this late in the year the temperature was reaching 30 degrees. A lot of the walking is done in full sun so be prepared to sweat!

Is there anything else you would like to add?

Turkey is a very beautiful country, the people are fabulous, the food is amazing and the beer is awesome. I absolutely loved this trip and would highly recommend it to anyone considering it. I have done several trips with Exodus now and this is definitely one of my favourites.

    Walking the Lycian Way

A stunning point to point trek through Turkey's pinewood forest, with a lovely finish along the cliffs looking out along the Turquoise coast. In our group we had a mixed range of abilities and fitness but the pace was set well by the tour guide so that it was enjoyable for everyone with regular regrouping.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

Getting the chance to experience a trail that for the 7 days was mostly just ourselves and hardly another tourist insight.

What did you think of your group leader?

Both Ali and Jasar were professional, organised and personable. Top notch and just what you would hope for.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Definitely plan to climb Mt Olympos as the views are certainly worth the effort.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

Some of our group took earlier flights than the group flights on the last day and missed out on the chance to explore Antalya. I was not aware too much of Antalya before hand but found the old town of Antalya very picturesque, charming and definitely worth a visit.

    Lycian Way Walk

A well organized trip with a great leader

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

Learning about those that had habituated the area we walked in. Perhaps visiting Olympos.

What did you think of your group leader?

Excellent - he was a leader, he conveyed ideas well, he allowed us to walk at our pace, but took breaks frequently enough to keep us together. Well done.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Wear shoes that are "broken in".

Is there anything else you would like to add?

I learned a lot about the history and culture of Turkey - this trip proves that travel is the best education.

    Walking the Lycian Way

After a good experience on our trip to Bosnia last year, we decided that this year we wanted to do a point to point walk and chose this holiday in Turkey. The walks cover a variety of terrains from wide forest paths to steep climbs and traversing the snow covered parts of Mount Tahtali. Parts of the trail are pretty tough, especially in the heat we had, but the views and scenery are well worth all the effort. The accommodation was good and always clean and the owners/staff were very friendly and helpful. We really enjoyed the food as well.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

Getting to the top of Mount Tahtali was a real highlight of the holiday. The views from the top are spectacular and you have the satisfaction of having made it under your own steam and not by the cable car!

What did you think of your group leader?

Ali was a great trip leader. He looked after us well and was very friendly and sociable. He's really familiar with the route so we were in safe hands.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

We'd definitely recommend this trip as a chance to see some of the less travelled parts of Turkey. Make sure you have a good level of fitness and do some training walks involving a few steep climbs.

    Trekking in Turkey

This was our first visit to Turkey and our first experience of a trekking holiday. We had a fantastic time, although at the moment my feet may disagree with me. We covered about 100 km and we found it challenging even though we do a fair amount of walking at home. Travelling in mid May the thing we found toughest was the heat (30c +) which was quite energy sapping. The free day was much appreciated, not just for the rest to our feet, but the opportunity to do some washing. We went sea kayaking to explore the coast, a trip organised by our guide Ali.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

So many. The country is beautiful, the people very welcoming and approachable, the walking demanding but ever so rewarding - especially the feeling of completing the trek on Friday, our group were excellent company through out. This was one of our best holidays.

What did you think of your group leader?

Ali and Jasar were excellent guides. Everything they did they approached professionally, organising everything and helping - those of us stuck in the snow or crossing a river over a tree trunk appreciated a helping hand, imparting knowledge and historical details, keeping the right pace, looking after the whole group and always with a friendly smile. They made a great contribution to our time in Turkey.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

The accommodation although at times simple was invariable clean, the food good - the owners taking an obvious pride in their establishments and meals. We found the heat tiring. We shall pack more plasters next time.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

This was our first time on a point to point itinerary, we enjoyed it and it gave us an opportunity to see a wider area and different accommodation than we had previously experienced in a centre based holiday. We are already looking forward to another holiday with Exodus.

    What a fantastic week!

I was originally planning to walk the Inca Trail to Macchu Picchu this month, but didn't book my trip early enough to get my golden pass unfortunately. Having set myself up for a challenging holiday this year, I decided to delay my trip to Peru and book something else for this year instead. A walking trip along the Lycian Way ended up being my replacement plan and my... how glad I am for it. This trip has been the best one I have done so far: The trail walks were amazing, tough all right, but also beautiful, allowing me to experience the multitude of terrains and sceneries the south coast of Turkey has to offer. The extra challenge of climbing up Mount Olympos on the second day was the cherry on top of the cake, and being able to do this with a fantastic team of like-minded people and excellent leaders made it extra special to me. The rest day in Cirali was very welcome after three days of walking, and gave us an opportunity to rest our sore feet. Part of our group decided to try sea kayaking, and not being one much for relaxing on the beach, I decided to join them, which was great fun. I have come back from my trip having fallen in love with Turkey, and having made new friends along the way. If you're in for a bit of an adventure, I'd definitely recommend this trip.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

Reaching the top of Mount Olympos and battling against the waves on our sea kayaking trip in Cirali. The fantastic variety of trails we followed, with pretty much no one else but us walking on it, was also a highlight of my week. It made each walk that extra special to me.

What did you think of your group leader?

Ali was an excellent group leader. Always very professional and attentive to the group, ensuring that everyone was keeping safe and enjoying themselves. But he was also very approachable, friendly and talkative, which to me made all the difference. He is the best guide I have travelled with so far.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

This is a challenging holiday, ensure you have a reasonable level of fitness before signing up for this trip. I am a regular walker and runner at home, and still found some part of this trip rather challenging myself.

    Walking the Lycian Way

Beautiful scenery and friendly professional guides made this a trip to remember.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

When the whole group made it to the top of Mount Olympus.

What did you think of your group leader?

Professional and friendly. He ensured that the walking pace was appropriate to the group and supported us well throughout the trip.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

This is a good trip for people of moderate fitness, not too demanding and thoroughly enjoyable.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

Turkey is a beautiful country that is well worth a visit.

    Brilliant holiday

The combination of scenery, terrain, sunshine and swimming in the sea was perfect. Thoroughly enjoyed the trip, great guide and lots of lovely people too - and great food!

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

Several of us had doubts about the Olympus peak but we were encouraged and well supported and everyone made it without problem. Then at the end of the third day of walking, as we swam in the sea at Cirali, we spied Olympus behind the nearer hills - amazing to think we had been up there just the day before!

What did you think of your group leader?

    Excellent leader and assistant

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Wear your boots to travel!!!! I didn't and had to borrow walking sandals until Easyjet delivered my luggage... And it turns out walking sandals are not at all shabby for this trip.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

I thought it was excellent value, thoroughly enjoyable.

    Walking the Lycian Way

A lovely walk along the southern Turkish coast part by the sea and part inland. Walking was mostly easy. We stayed in some local peoples homes which was interesting. On the rest day we hired a boat which took us to some lovely bays were we could swim. Local food was very enjoyable.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

Seeing the eternal flames and toasting marsh mallows on them. The Turkish food was really good, I ate some of the best fish I have ever eaten and all the fresh fruit and vegetables were lovely. The boat trip was very enjoyable. Swimming in the heavy rain in the sea on the one day it rained was also fantastic.

What did you think of your group leader?

We had two. Both were very friendly and easy to get on with.

    Walking the Lycian Way

A great trip and a great group. The scenery was beautiful and lots of plants were I full bloom. Nice mix of coast and mountain. Sociable & entertaining guides.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

Reaching the summit, some of the group members, the Turkish ' lady of the house'. Finishing the trip with a Turkish bath and massage!

What did you think of your group leader?

Great group leaders, fun and helpful. Stocked with plenty of bandages for blistered feet?

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

This is a challenging walk, so check your fitness out and be prepared for some basic accommodation.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

The last walk was very tiring and the 2.5 hr trip to Antalya following this was hard going, I wondered if there was another way round this.

    WALKING THE LYCIAN WAY

    A very enjoyable experience.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

High on the slopes of Mt Olympos - amazing views and ancient trees. And staying in the village house.

What did you think of your group leader?

Very agreable and helpful, and knowledgeable about the area. Was able to name trees and plants in English. He was easy to talk to and his route finding ability excellent.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

This is not a light stroll - involves walking at a good pace and quite a lot of uphill going on rough paths. Sticks and good boots essential.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

The food was great - only one sub-standard meal. It would be lovely to stay in more village situations if that could be arranged.

    WALKING THE LYCIAN WAY

A very well-designed and executed trip, through beautiful and varied landscapes in good company. This was my fifth trip to Turkey and third time on the Lycian Way - it showed me a side of Turkey I had not seen before in areas that would have been hard to explore alone.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

The stunning views waking up on the first morning, with Mount Olympos shining in the sunshine. The mountain was a constant presence.

What did you think of your group leader?

Great - capable, enthusiastic and knowledgeable. Took good care of us all and made sure we enjoyed ourselves.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Read the trip notes. Then you will avoid the disappointment experienced by those reviewers who expected gentle seaside strolls (much of the route is inland) and who did not expect to have time to explore Antalya (which is delightful). You will also be prepared for heat if you go mid-season (not too hot late September/October).

Is there anything else you would like to add?

I seldom write reviews but thought this trip deserved better ones than some received in the past.

    WALKING THE LYCIAN WAY

A rewarding week of walking and relaxing away from the crowds. Varied terrain, great weather, good company and food along with satisfactory accommodation. A couple of lengthy and challenging days (particularly on the optional Olympos ascent) to be aware of - with uneven terrain and prolonged uphill/downhill stints. Definitely at the top end of the moderate grade. Optional boat trip at Cirali on rest day recommended. Stunning coastal walk to the lighthouse on the last day. Ali is an enthusiastic guide who was spot on with his organisation and pacing.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

The coastal walk through forest to Cape Gelidonya light house - accompanied by a stray dog who adopted the group for the day!

What did you think of your group leader?

First rate. Low key but highly effective. Always on hand to offer assistance (even on his rest day!)

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Some challenging stretches of walking as previously noted. Poles highly advisable.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

A thoroughly enjoyable week of walking taking in mountain and coastal scenery.

    WALKING THE LYCIAN WAY

Several ingredients make for a great trip, the group, the guide, the food, the scenery and the weather, we had it all!

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

Reaching the summit of Mount Tahtali, despite my advancing years (66), and savouring the achievement and great panoramic views. Being 'threatened' by a preying mantis in the middle of our path, rearing up on its hind legs to warn us off!

What did you think of your group leader?

Ali was brilliant, he looked after us exceedingly well.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

The trip notes don't mention insect repellent, but this is a must for the lower legs in particular.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

This was one of my best trips, particularly as the group, though diverse in many ways, gelled together almost instantly. On the welcome rest, beach, day the group hired a gulet, which took us to very secluded bays along the coast; it broke up the walking perfectly.
