    WILDLIFE & WILDERNESS OF ALASKA

An amazing wildlife tour, Alaska is beautiful with an overwhelming landscape. The tour included  a variety of activities for different abilities. The camping is 'rustic', with good facilities. Our leaders Mark and Alia  were friendly, helpful and very organised.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

Denali grizzlies, glacier hiking, a wildlife cruise around Prince William Sound and flying over the Cook Inlet in a float plane all take some beating!

What did you think of your group leader?

Our group leaders were very well organised with the camping equipment and campfire cooking. They provided a nice variety of meals and opportunities to visit supermarkets when necessary. They were friendly, helpful and knowledgeable about Alaska and organised activities efficiently. There were a couple of long travelling days which they made comfortable by stopping off at viewpoints and short walk opportunities and they were happy to stop at any time for wildlife viewing.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Take advantage of the laundry facilities throughout the tour, take waterproof clothing, and a pair of binoculars and a good camera are a must!

Is there anything else you would like to add?

A fantastic tour in an unspoilt wilderness.

    WILDLIFE & WILDERNESS OF ALASKA

Varied trip through a stunning part of the world. Lots of activity, plenty of wildlife and glaciers and mountains everywhere.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

For me the ice climbing was a real highlight, climbing out of the glacier was a huge rush. Also loved the sea kayaking round icebergs. On a more sedentary day, the Kenai Fjords wildlife cruise supplied us with a spectacular amount of wildlife including an extremely active group of humpback whales.

What did you think of your group leader?

Vicky and Amanda were faultless leaders: their aim of getting us to enjoy every day was obviously one that they really cared about. They communicated their own love of Alaska to the group throughout the trip, I'd be delighted to travel with them again. Their culinary skills were amazing: able to cater to a host of dietary needs on 4 gas rings. Also couldn't be faulted for their in depth knowledge of the best dive bars in town!

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

The trip notes don't mention walking poles, but the FAQs do - I'd say take them, some of the walks were pretty steep and I wished I'd taken mine with me. Some of the campsites are indeed 'rustic' with limited options for showering in the second week and no running water at all at the final campsite felt a bit unnecessary. The Alaskan mozzies are as fearsome as their reputation too, not much you can do to deter them in all honesty, just be ready to itch.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

This was without doubt one of the most beautiful places I've been, every day had jaw dropping views and ithe itinerary was more active than I had expected which was great. Most times the choice was open as to how active to be, so everyone in the group was able to go at their own pace which worked really well. We were lucky to have amazing weather through the whole of the trip - I could imagine that the camping may not have been so much fun had it been tipping down and cold for two weeks, but that's the risk you take. I guess. The final day of sea planing and bears got a big build up and it was a good day, but for me not necessarily the highlight.

    WILDLIFE & WILDERNESS OF ALASKA

Fantastic combination of wildlife and scenery in Alaska's top destinations. The combination of stunning glaciers, fjords, mountains together with humpbacks, moose, bears, sea otters, beaver and caribou made this an unforgettable holiday

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

There were many - the top three were : a) Watch humpbacks breach in Prince William Sound and Kenai Fjords National Park b) The 90 minute scenic flight over the Bagley icefield from McCarthy c) Watching two grizzlies, each with three cubs on our bear watching trip

What did you think of your group leader?

Both group leaders, Rebecca and Leah were very good. They organised the group well, got the right level of group participation from the outset and interacted with and informed the group very well. Rebecca's cooking was exceptionally good

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

The only advice3 would be to take after bite in addition to deet spray as the mosquitos in certain areas were a problem

Is there anything else you would like to add?

We were lucky enough to experience good weather for the majority of the trip. Would thoroughly recommend this trip to anyone who enjoys stunning scenery and wildlife.

    WILDLIFE & WILDERNESS OF ALASKA

A trip of a lifetime with breath-taking scenery! A good balance of challenging hikes and other activities like the whale watching cruise and scenic float plane flight. Its definitely aimed at people who like to be busy and active on their holiday.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

The hike to Harding ice field was fantastic with amazing views and ever changing terrain to hike through.

What did you think of your group leader?

The group leaders were fun-loving and quirky. Their enthusiasm and passion for Alaska was contagious.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Its nothing like I imagined or expected. Go with an open mind and you will love it.

    WILDLIFE & WILDERNESS OF ALASKA

Wow, what a trip, lots of wildlife and the scenery was ever changing but amazing

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

It is hard to pick just one but the Glacier Flight in Denali National Park was fantastic, flying so close to Mount McKinley, seeing how the glacier has changed the valley. Also the float plane bear viewing trip was amazing. We go so close to the bears but they did not seem bothered by us at all.

What did you think of your group leader?

It was strange having two tour leaders but Mark and Alia did a very good job, provided lots of alternative options for the group not wanting to hike and were willing to amend things when the weather was poor.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Make sure you take a mosquito head net, they were the worst for 40 years and we all got bitten.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

Alaska is an amazing place unlike any other on the planet, with lots of glaciers, waterfalls and wildlife

    WILDLIFE & WILDERNESS OF ALASKA

A varied trip with good wildlife viewing opportunities.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

The day spent bear viewing was fabulous.

What did you think of your group leader?

Ryan was always friendly and a very good cook.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Take a very good camera with a zoom lens for wildlife pictures.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

The trip is varied and Alaska is huge.  Thus the walking opportunities are limited - both by the weather and the amount of distances covered.  This is a wildlife and wilderness trip - not a hiking trip.

    WILDLIFE & WILDERNESS OF ALASKA

A fantastic holiday with a variety of activities to choose from. Stunning scenery and an great experience! It was excellent that the float plane bear viewing, and the wildlife cruise were included.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

Glacier walking was amazing... the daredevil flight in the float plane... getting to the top of the Harding Ice Field hike... There is so much incredible scenery everywhere you look, it is difficult to pinpoint one place!

What did you think of your group leader?

We had an excellent chef to do the campfire cooking, which was fantastic. They had obviously done a lot of research on Alaska even though only one of them had actually been there before. As we were the first trip of the season there were a few organisational / timing problems from the Exodus itineracy but the guides sorted these and did everything they could to make sure that everyone completed all the activities they wanted to. Thank you!

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

With the trip notes as they are now, there is more hiking suggested on the itinerary, i.e. when you 'stop for a short hike' during a driving day. These tend to be just lunch stops or a short train (a mile at most) to a viewpoint. Take advantage of laundry when you get it, and collect quarters for the varying prices of showers and washing machines.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

The trip was fantastic, with such a range of activities... plenty of variation for a great holiday!

    ALASKAN HIKE

Alaska is a mind-blowingly huge state and this trip is a great way to get a flavour of all the wonders of its scenery, wildlife, people and history. Taking time to sit and drink in the sheer size of the place is well worth it - the word "awesome" is entirely appropriate.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

Spending an entire day with a smile on my face as we walked on a glacier. Flying in a light aircraft over the glaciers in the Wrangell mountains. A wildlife cruise in the Kenai fjords where a pod of humpback whales decided to put on a wonderful display of leaping and flapping their fins in a joyous dance, sharing good beer and conversation with local people in McCarthy.

What did you think of your group leader?

Pete was excellent. This is a trip where you have a huge range of choices as to what you do and how active/relaxed you want to be. He managed to juggle all the different interests and needs of our group, making sure that we were well-informed and well-fed, driving long distances in between activities at times. His own love of Alaska and enthusiasm came across throughout.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Take every opportunity to do all the options which interest you; the sheer scale of the place is amazing. This is definitely not a "budget" option - things aren't cheap, so do make sure you've got a good supply of spending money and credit cards available. Veggies may find that the food options are a bit limited - most meals will normally contain large quantities of meat or fish.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

Having had my original choice of trek cancelled (not very sensitively handled) and experienced some administrative slips with insurance my faith in Exodus' organisation has been tested. Thankfully, the knowledgeable and enthusiastic recommendation of the Alaskan Hike by Cat in the office was infectious and the trip itself was excellent.

    ALASKAN HIKE

DO NOT TAKE THIS TRIP. If you are hoping to undertake a hiking holiday, camping in the wilderness, seeing the natural sights of Alaska with an experienced guide then think again.  We spent the majority of our time traveling on buses (hiking for only 3 out of 15 days), camping on the sides of roads, beside car parks and in RV parks, had a guide that had never led the trip before and was rude, were fed the cold leftovers from the previous night’s cooked meals for lunch and had a Guide that continually pushed us to take excursions for which he/his firm would receive commissions (to the extent that we were not told about many other options).

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

The wildlife and scenery were good, but unfortunately the trip was not set up to allow us to experience these in a meaningful manner.

What did you think of your group leader?

The group leader had never led the trip before (and had only ever been on it once before).  He was rude, unhelpful, unknowledgeable and incompetent.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

    DO NOT TAKE THIS TRIP.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

The following are a list of items we have complained to Exodus about; i) the lack of hiking opportunities, even when indicated as available on the itinerary; ii) the lack of alternative hikes and pursuits, even when indicated as available on the itinerary (only 3 days out of a 15 day tour were spent hiking); iii) the lack of helpfulness of the Guide in addressing requests for hikes (as members of the group became unhappy about the provision of hiking); iv) the Guide’s lack of experience leading the trip (this was his first time leading this trip and he had only accompanied another guide once before); v) the Guide’s forcefulness in pushing clients into undertaking paid excursions for which he/his firm received commissions, whilst offering little or no alternative; vi) the Guide’s insistence on accompanying guests on activities, even when these activities were guided by a third party (although it should be noted he was only interested in accompanying guests on the most interesting activities, such a sightseeing flights, ice climbing etc.); vii) The amount of time spent traveling, exceeding the advertised bus times for the same journeys by a considerable margin. This was due to the Guide’s insistence that we stopped off frequently, even when no one had any interest in getting off.; viii) the general rudeness of the Guide; ix) the Guide’s insistence on keeping the group together when we would have preferred to spend time in smaller groups; x) the extremely poor camping facilities (mainly RV parks and town center locations i.e. not in any way an experience of the wilderness).; xi) the lack of exposure to the wilderness of Alaska

    Alaskan Hike

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

Two aspects, the dramatic changes in scenery and the wildlife trip from Seaward.  On the way back we saw a whale flipping from side to side.  Awesome.

What did you think of your group leader?

He was a Trek Amercia trip leader so had only reached the dizzy heights of 30.  Was knowledgeable of the area and good fun. Also a superb cook who left some of us feeling inadequate in the kitchen! One of the trip had lost a bag and he did everything possible to help them.  One piece of advice, if you're particular about music, take your own along then negotiate for air time in the mini-bus!

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Jungle formula.  Don't leave home without it.  The national 'bird' of Alaska is vicious.  Binoculars for the wildlife cruise.

A Great Trip But Opportunities Missed

We did have a very good experience, we saw some amazing wildlife but are left with some sense dissatisfaction. We didn't get the walking experiences we expected and there was a the lack of cultural input to the tour. There was some disconnect between the expectations based on the Exodus trip description and the tour provided by Great American Adventures. In addition, the trip involved driving long distances in a small bus and "participative camping", particularly in some sites that were not up to the standard we expected. The tour definitely needs second tour guide, who is very well informed about the country. Although guides in National Parks etc provided some of this, if the tour does not offer this cultural content it becomes a interesting but superficial road trip.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

Overall itinerary - good taste of what Alaska has to offer. Wildlife viewing, particularly bears fishing for salmon, and the Hardy Glacier Icefield walk. Some of the add-on activities were terrific (but pricey), particularly the glacier kayaking and the ice walk.

What did you think of your group leader?

The tour leader was enthusiastic and well organised, drove safely over very long distances, managed the group well and provided tasty, fresh food. However, with only one guide there there was little information about the land, and cultural context.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

A good trip to see an amazing country and its wildlife. Be prepared for long distances, "participatory camping", possible add-on expenses, and doing your own research on the country - its geography/geology and culture.

    CK

I am from Hong Kong. Other team members are from Dutch, UK and Switzerland. I feel happy with them and enjoy working together : shopping, preparing meals and washing. The trip meets my expectations in general. But two campsites are really very very basic, especially the lack of adequate toilet facilities within walking distance.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

The views of mountains, glaciers, lakes, wild flowers, wildlifes and peaceful environment were the most inspirational moment of my trip.

What did you think of your group leader?

Our leader and driver Abby is good, caring and helpful.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

This is really a wildlife and wilderness observation and walking trip and need to do some campsite work.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

In case of bad weather, it seems that some campsites do not provide shelters for cooking and dining.

A great trip but not quite the one we booked!

Brilliant for wildlife viewing and scenery but not much walking

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

Cruising through Prince William Sound, seeing humpback whales and a grizzly bear only feet away.

What did you think of your group leader?

Jeannie was excellent at organising the group. She worked extremely hard and responded well to the concerns of the group about changes to the itinary.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

The trip is run by Grand American Adventures who seem to have altered the programme removing much of the walking and heavily promoting the (costly!) optional activities. Our leader appeared to be unfamiliar with the Exodus trip notes and incorporated hiking options only in response to a mutiny by our group. There is only one leader on this tour now, not two as indicated in previous reviews - expect a high degree of participation! In addition to setting up and dismantling the camp everyone was expected to undertake daily chores ranging from cleaning the van to cooking dinner for the group.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

An excellent trip but lost a star due to issues highlighted above

    Rob Howden

We thoroughly enjoyed the Alaskan experience, a land that has so much to offer in the way of animals, scenery and cultural history. There were however some issues with the trip which we feel could be improved. Participation in the running of the trip to the extent of rosters, planning menus and preparing meals for the whole group of 14 detracted from a relaxed holiday in a wonderful environment. We followed this trip with another through Yellowstone and found if much more relaxing and enjoyable due to having two leaders and no rostered jobs, while still happily helping around the camp. There was also an emphasis on extra activities outside the trip itinerary.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

    1) Bus trip in Denali National Park. 2) Boat trip out of Seward 3) Bear watching from the small boats out of Soldotna

What did you think of your group leader?

Jeannie was very organised and organised the group out of necessity. We believe this trip and with a full complement of people that two leaders is essential. We would have liked more information on cultures and history of the country as we travelled along.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

    Read the summary above.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

Having booked through Exodus and selected this trip on the basis of your itinerary we found that the Grand American Tour did not alway include the same itinerary. We did enjoy the trip but felt that either some of the extras should either be included in the itinerary or more options included when extras are offered. As comparison in Yellowstone while there were some extras nobody took them on, as the included itinerary was exciting, full and keep us fully occupied with the help of the leaders.
