  • On hotel based tours, meals are not included and you will usually eat out in local restaurants. To help you budget for your meals on average hotel breakfasts cost from US$6-12, lunches from US$8-15 and dinners from US$13-30; this does not include alcoholic beverages. Wine costs approximately US$5 per glass and beer US$4 per bottle. Please also be aware that a tip of approximately 15%-20% is added to group meals in North American restaurants. Applicable taxes will also be added to all listed menu prices. Your Tour Leader may offer your group the option to operate a ‘lunch only’ food kitty, this has proven to be a popular alternative to three daily restaurant meals. Leaders will fully explain this option while on your tour, and the whole group will have to agree for this system to run. Please make sure we are aware of any special meal requirements before travelling.

    Drive to Baxter State Park.

You travel from one of the most wellknown segments of the Appalachian Trail, to the most pristine. Baxter State Park is home to Mount Katahdin, the finishing point of the 2200 miles long Appalachian Trail. Wander and enjoy the largest and most remote wilderness in the eastern United States. Here you can truly ‘get away from it all’ on footpaths that wind through undisturbed forest and along the crystal-clear lakes and streams of northern Maine. Keep both eyes and ears open for the chance meeting with some of the wildlife that abounds here. This tranquil wilderness is virtually untouched since the days of the first settlers, over three hundred years ago. As you pause to reflect on the solitude of this beautiful place, it is quite impossible to imagine that twothirds of America’s population lives within a day’s drive. There are two options with varying difficulty; the first is Mt. Katahdin / Baxter Peak which is a strenuous hike with more than 4,150 ft. elevation gain and taking approximately 10 hours. The rewarding views on this trail are some of the finest in New England however, should only be attempted by those fit enough. The second option is to Daicey and Kidney Pond, an easy to moderate walk with little to no elevation difference. This is a nature trail with the Appalachian Trail running through a section of it. Canoes can be rented after a couple of miles or why not simply sit back and admire the views. Possible hiking options: Easy: Sandy Stream Pond Trail | 4.5km loop/1-3hrs | minimal elevation gain Easy: Little Abol Falls Trail | 2.6km round-trip/1-3hrs | 107m Easy to moderate: Katahdin Stream Falls | 3.9km/1-3hrs | 183m Easy to moderate: Daicey & Kidney Pond | 3.2km/2hrs | little to no elevation gain Strenuous: Mt. Katahdin/Baxter Peak | 15km round-trip/10 hrs | 1,264m
