Should I take walking poles for the volcanoes?

The terrain on all the volcanoes can be steep and uneven underfoot with lots of loose ash and other material. Walking poles can help you steady yourself and also take some of the pressure off your knees. Although not compulsory, they are recommended for this trip. It is strongly recommended that you wear gaiters to help keep the ash out of your walking boots during the optional climbs of Mt Etna and Stromboli so that you don't have to keep stopping to empty them.

Will I need any warm clothes?

To get the best views of the volcanic activity on Stromboli, we walk up to the summit at sunset (optional). Although at the start of your walk it may be warm enough for shorts and t-shirts, it can be a lot cooler higher up. It is not unusual for the temperature higher up to be some 20 degrees lower than it is at the bottom. We therefore advise you to bring a lightweight pair of warm gloves, a windproof/waterproof jacket and warmer layer to go underneath. Mt Etna is even higher than Stromboli and for those who want to take the optional trek to the summit, a windproof/waterproof jacket is essential as there is often a strong wind blowing; the combination of altitude and wind chill mean that it can feel very chilly even if it is a very hot day down in Catania at sea level. Long trousers and gaiters are also strongly recommended for the two optional summit treks.

    How active is Stromboli?

Stromboli is one of the most active volcanoes in the world and on average erupts once every 20 minutes. It has been erupting almost continuously since 1932 and has been active for over 2000 years. It has been known as the ‘Lighthouse of the Mediterranean’ since Roman times as its eruptions are visible at night far out to sea. It rarely pours out flows of lava but instead sporadically explodes molten rock high up into the air. You can view this amazing fiery spectacle either from a path part-way up Stromboli or, for the best views, from a viewing point at the summit.

How do I compare trips for my next adventure?

To compare trips for consideration, you can add them to your 'Shortlist'.

During your search for your next adventure you can save 'holidays' to your Shortlist and compare trips. For this to work correctly, you must be signed in during your 'user session'; i.e. during your time on the Exodus website. These will then be saved in your account (don't have an Exodus website account?  Sign up now!).

The Shortlist menu item (top of every page) only appears when holidays are added. Adding holidays can be done by clicking on the 'Add to shortlist' with the 'Heart' symbol on any 'Holiday' page above the 'At a Glance' section, or in the 'holiday' panels within Search Results pages, or in the 'You might also like...' section at the foot of the trip page viewed. The selected holidays will be saved into your account for consideration and can be removed there, as well as from the 'compare trips' page from the menu link located at the top of every page.
